Damn.

I know they're not on a label right now and are selling the record themselves. If you're friends with them on facebook, I'd get into contact with them through that man.

Really? I thought they'd signed to Flying Nun?
But you know, there is shit going on down here that I don't like. Anyway, what was I saying?

That's what I had thought too seeing as their last album was put out by Flying Nun. A week so back I remember reading on their facebook that they are putting it out themselves this time around, and the only way to get it would be to e-mail them and all that.

Anthesiac
Christchurch band, glorious sonic rock. They also have a campaign to help fund their new EP on NZ's equivalent of Kickstarter, Pledgeme

T54
Another Christchurch band, they share a bassist with Anthesiac. They're also one of the new breed of Flying Nun signings with an album due out later this year. Their previous EPs are fantastic, a heavy shoe gaze guitar sound with hooks aplenty

The Golden Awesome
Quite the show gaze revivalists, and very good at it. Signed to M' Lady Records

Superette
Borne of the remnants of the JPS Experience, quite a crunchy and bouncy rock band on Flying Nun in the nineties. Bassist Ben Howe now heads Arch Hill Records

King Loser
One of those great loose, druggy (mostly) lo-fi bands with a thing all of their own, they had some great songs in the nineties too, mostly courtesy of Flying Nun

Sora Shima
Another great instrumental post-rock band, this one from Hamilton. High Dependency Unit has had quite an influence on the more experimentally minded in New Zealand over the last decade

The Shrugs
Just a great ramshackle indie guitar pop band. Check out Dead By Morning from How to Knit a Pony

Idiot Prayer
In the interests of disclosure, my old band. We always described ourselves as a mix of Shellac and High Dependency Unit, with the a healthy dose of The Jesus Lizard.

If you have time and the inclination, here's a NZ music podcast, focussing on vinyl only:
Counting the Beat Podcast

And here's one I do on one of the student radio stations in New Zealand:
The Local, Radio One New Zealand Music Show

It may be of interest to know that quality NZ music is as obscure in New Zealand as it is anywhere else. Initiatives to increase the amount of NZ music heard in New Zealand have generally resulted in more derivative blandness getting attention inside NZ while the good stuff seems to remain resolutely underground

Idiot Prayer is awesome. Your band rules dude. I was actually introduced to your guy's last record close to a year ago. Great stuff.

*Stephen Merchant voice* Well, this has backfired, hasn't it...

Seriously though, thanks man.

More NZ musics:

Alizarin Lizard
Semi-psychedelic guitar pop band from Dunedin, famed for playing 40 date tours in a country that can reasonably expect one, maybe two shows from an international act and four from any other touring NZ band

Brown
Just really good, simple and melodic guitar pop

Live Sound Engineering is a local live sound company, makes live recordings and puts some of them online. Provides a good snapshot of a section of live music in Dunedin over the past few years. Personally, I'd check out the Mountaineater and Soulseller recordings

New War have just released a new album. Not really sure if they've been mentioned here, but I dig their shit.

This is off their 12" single:

The Postures
Weird NZ noise punk band. Bassless, sludgy. Great.

TFF
Razor sharp, super fast jazznoisepunkcore. Pretty much indescribable

DHDFDs
As above.

Slugfuckers. noise post punk band.

and Oren Ambarchi's anti-music band, Menstruation Sisters. I LOVE this band. Fans of Harry Pussy should get something out of their records.

Like the latest Useless Children record a lot, and glad to see a recommendation of Laughing Clowns, love that band. Lots of recommendations I wanna check out too so thanks.

Disappointed not to see any mentions of the great Venom P. Stinger though! One of my all time favourite bands. Check out the record 'Meet My Friend Venom' if you like the sounds of the videos below... "they said he likes people but venom hates 'em..."

Good video for the track, and appropriate use of David Yow in it.
