Yeah, I found the neck to be really weird and I don't have a problem with large necks. Overall I just didn't like the feel of the bass. I played another one recently and it was the same thing. Kind of a bummer because they look cool and sell pretty cheap.

Weird timing - I was just getting my bass out and thought I'd give the T-40 another shot and felt exactly how Elisha stated. Something on that just wasn't feeling right and I noticed it even after having not played for months. Went back to the Magnum and it was instantly better.

The magnum is a bit less wide at the nut, but thicker all the way down the neck. I'm sure I could get used to the T-40, but whatever.

I like the T-40 neck. If someone takes the time to actually set the damn thing up they are super playable -- and I have small hands. Overall feel is like a P-Bass in terms of scale and nut width. I found the neck to be a little flatter in radius as well as a lot less chunky in thickness compared to a 70s P-Bass.

The ridiculous looking bridge has a lot to do with the sound of these guys. The bridge is stupid heavy and has a lot of mass.

If I had to compare the sound of a T-40 to something else, I'd say they sound kind of Rickenbacker like but with an actual usable neck pickup sound.

Too bad they are just about the heaviest basses around.

This is "wrong" for guitar too.

But it all depends on location, position and chord shape.

Yes, obviously doing it wrong:

Yup. Like I said, it depends on the particular chord and position... but this would "technically" be terrible form. His guitar teacher would wrap him on the wrists for that. But yeah, who gives a fuck right?

Luckily he died before tendonitis and carpel-tunnel set in.

I see all sorts of Peavey T-series guitars & basses, commonly in the 300-350 range. I'm never interested in them. Good for those that have them & like them.
If you search a decent Fender(not squire), Memphis, or Japanese copy can be had cheap. 200-250.

I'm pushing one of my friends to check this out.

He certainly would have been able to get away with it longer than I could, Hendrix supposedly had very large hands.

I have fairly long & thin fingers. I can palm a basketball no problem. Off the dribble, yep. Not surprisingly easier with my left even though I'm right handed.

This is something a lot of people can learn, not sure if it has much to do with the size of your hands. Likewise I'm fairly sure most people can learn to play with thick or thin necks given enough practice.

Don't dismiss all Squier's. Most of the '93-94 Mexican Squiers and Fenders are the same exact instrument with a different headstock logo. The earliest Japanese ones from '82-83 were identical to the Fender branded ones, same plant, USA pickups etc... and the '83-84 Japanese Squires are fantastic guitars, on par with anything with the Fender name being made at the time. Some people claim that they're better than the USA fenders from the time period and knowing how dodgy those can be, I wouldn't disagree. I could give more examples. That said, many Squiers are total shit and should be avoided like the plague but some are totally good guitars that sell for short money. I just sold a '93 MIM Squier Strat and the thing was really nice, better than many Fender's I've played and I'm a total guitar snob. Just about the best $200 guitar you're going to find.

The peavey t-15 looks pretty good too. Simpler controls than the T-60 and I think its just straight single coils.

Isn't the T-15 a short-scale though?

I agree, I've come across older(especially 80's) Squires that are a much better build than Mexican models & could compete with American made. Definitely older MIJ have a solid reputation.
I've also come across decent MIM's.

Ive noticed some t-40's seem to have the pole piece exposed and some dont. Is there a difference in sound or is it just cosmetic? Seems sort of odd.

They sound a little different. The ones without the exposed blade are older. They sound a little quiter and darker.

They are short scale, like 22". They are tiny, but pretty fun to play. The pickups in the T-15 sound awesome though. Somewhere between a P90 and a Charlie Christian pickup.

Me too. My hands are actually way too big for me to play guitar with proper technique. I definitely use chords where my thumb wraps around the bottom of the neck to fret notes on the low string. Big handed guitar playing has its advantages and disadvantages.

The worst thing about it for me is the 'sharp' edges of the sides of the fingerboard. Just really uncomfortable. I generally prefer rosewood too, but it's usually not a deal breaker like with this bass. The width isn't so much the issue.

I am glad I am not the only one who hated mine, blech. You can get a variety of good sounds out of it, but it was nearly unplayable. Heavy as fuck too.
