Lydon is quite a character and I like both of his bands. This PIL interview with Tom Synder from 1980 is pretty hilarious. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_BZ2UoBZzEI

Look, if you don't like Lydon's vocals, that's that and you're probably not going to like PiL. Here's the thing: The vocals on Second Edition are probably, in my opinion, the best he ever sang because they're the most expressionist. (The most out-there he ever got was Flowers of Romance, though, which makes Second Edition look like Top 40.) He's warbling, groaning, and sneering all over the place, but he expresses more contempt, weary hatred and sarcasm than almost anyone else while doing it. (Seriously, "Chant" is pure bile from a vocal standpoint.) This is all what I hear, anyway, but I love Lydon's vocals and always have. So, there you go.

True. Still, it wouldn't hurt to try. I mean, I really want to like this album in particular. It appeals to me on the surface, but . . .

I just bought a used Death Disco single that's in pretty good condition, save for the sleeve which is slightly dirty.

I'm afraid to put it on my turn table

Do you still want this? Both sides of the Death Disco 12" are incredible..

On the John Lydon best of DVD there's a ten minute version as well as two alternative mixes for Albatross, but I have no equipment to rip and upload them.

I am also the man for PiL bootlegs from the 70s and 1980 if anyone wants them. I uploaded them on the Sendspace thread aaaaages ago.

I'd appreciate an upload of that 12", yes. Thank you.

I think I still have some of the boots you uploaded, thanks for those, too.

Um, like, not crap?

A good article about dub reggae and PiL:

Bass Cultural Vibrations: Visionaries, Outlaws, Mystics and Chanters

In this extensive article Greg Whitfield covers the origins of the Dub / Punk crossover from Jamaica to London. PiL and their entourage feature heavily throughout; along with the likes of Jah Shaka, Adrian Sherwood and Lee Perry, and bringing the story up to date with London's Disciples and More Rockers.

The whole article comes from a fresh perspective, and doesn't simply retread the usual "punky-reggae party" bollocks. For example, among the 'PiL' subjects covered are John's trip to Jamaica, The Steel Leg EP, and the often ignored PiL / On-U-Sound crossover. PiL / Dub fans will love it…

"Careering," 1980 (YouTube). Love that screechy Prophet synth.

I recently saw a DVD with a segment of the Tomorrow Show in, I think, 1979, with Levene and Lydon. I had forgotten how RIDICULOUSLY, HILARIOUSLY hostile and UTTERLY up their own asses they were. Snyder all but called them toolboxes. Also at the first closeup of Levene my friend cracked up and said "Oh no, HE'S not on heroin, no way."

Not crap!

Is this the DVD segment you were referring to, ctrl-s?

That may be true, but Tom Snyder was such a no nothing talking head idiot who had no idea what the band was about, that hostility from the band was pretty much a given, and totally expected. I remember watching it when it was originally broadcast, it was wonderful watching a tool like Tom Snyder being fucked around with.

See, while I'd argue that PiL had no idea what they were about much of the time either (that whole "communications company" bullshit, etc.), I also knew nothing about Tom Snyder and just thought he was trying and failing miserably at giving a regular '70's tv interview. He's actually better than some of the toolbags PiL had to deal with on TV:

I'll present this as evidence, with a little bit of "Chant" as a bonus. What a bunch of fucking retards.

That was actually done as an attempted publicity stunt for the show. They showed a clip of some nobody punk band saying Lydon was a sellout to try get him to repeat the Grundy incident somewhat with the Pistols.

The "sorry, rude word" followed by the eye roll is perhaps the coolest thing ever, and Wobbles's bleeping rant makes me laugh whenever I watch this.

I'd rather Public Image act like a bunch of cunts to an interview than be all nicey nice or even take the piss or whatever, I mean you're meant to rebel against something aren't you?

Well, of course. I'm saying that compared to those dickheads, Tom Snyder is small potatoes. That clip is awesome, John and Wobble gave them exactly what they deserved.

Snyder seems like an alright enough guy, and I actually think that he is interested in what the band has to say for the most part, only looks at a lot of his guests from an outsider point of view rather than actually being into them, and I'd rather that than someone who pretends to like something.

Compare the PiL interview with the Clash interview from a year later and, well, just look at the difference. I don't know what point I'm trying to make here, just the difference between the two is amazing.

My Dad had the best line about PIL. He walked into my room after I had been
playing the first record and said: "If that son of a bitch came to my house, I'd loan
him the shotgun to kill himself." As offended as my teenage self was, I had to
admit that was a great line.

I sold Flowers of Romance because there was no BASS. I should listen again.

Certainly Not Crap, but, excluding a few songs from the Flowers of Romance (that album, as a whole, comes across as tedious non-rock), everything after the first two LPs and early live material is pretty much blah-to-heinous.
