I heard a couple tracks off of the new record and it fucking blows. Lydon sounds horrible throughout.

He sounds as though he's attempting to convince us he's still relevant. Him and Madonna.

I thought of PiL as a collection of outsiders, led by an outsider, who was lucky enough to have been given a little cultural capital to spend.
With that he somehow managed to get some totally weirdo records pressed, and they found their way into the hands of people who needed to hear them. What a triumph.

Once none of these things were the case anymore maybe "PiL" should have been retired, and Lydon should have started a whole new thing.
Keep the corpse pretty.
Maybe Happy? could have been the final one. It's got it's moments and people like McGeoch are on it, but it sounds like a "this has run it's course, so goodbye" record.

Instead there are loads of people who aren't quite sure why people like me like PiL because they think of albums like That Which Is Not.

Have you evah got the feeling you were being chee-ihd?

Listen to it with the bass loud damnit! It's not amazing, but it's groovy enough. The first and last songs are the best.

I saw some footage of Pil playing the isle of wight 2011, or something, yesterday. They were fucking brilliant. The guitar player did an interesting trick with an electric hand held fan.

THIS IS PIL. P I L. PUBLIC. IMAGE. LIMITED. THIS IS PIL. PIL. PIL. PIL ZONE. THIS IS PIL. PIL. PIIIIIIL

Not Crap

also because new PIL made me revisit old PIL. Man, Peel Session version of Poptones kills.

Keith Levene is sooo good at the guitar. Is it just me or does Bob Mould's guitar playing sound a lot like Keith Levene's? Like Keith Levene with a flex.

The first Hoosker Doo single sounds a lot like PiL.

Re-reading parts of "Our Band Could Be Your Life" recently, it's funny how seemingly every band in that book had a "we opened for P.I.L. and they were fucking asshole rock stars and we were bummed" story.

John Lydon was pretty much born an intolerable asshole it seems. And the dude was a legitimate rock star (#1 single, network talk show slots, American Bandstand, etc.).

I've never seen any footage of John Lydon that made me think, "I'd like to meet that guy" despite PiL being one of my favorite bands.

I'm really getting Album recently, I've always thought it was okay but now I'm really starting to like the songs. I like the use of all the world instruments just because Bill Laswell could and I like that it's a big mix of musicians coming together, however I still zone out when Steve Vai is doing one of Doctor Who sound effect solos.

Also, say what you want about this song and this album (I actually like it) but check the drums man, they're fucking awesome.

It's originally from Flowers of Romance apparently, but it ended up getting 80s upped for This Is What You Want... Here's the original:

This Is What You Want... is the first PIL I ever heard and I still think it's a great album. Used to drop acid and listen to "The Order of Death" and draw the pictures it'd conjure up. Ha. Far better album than Album, which to this day I still don't get. Maybe I should give it another spin.

Too funny.

They were playing the new album at Amoeba when I was there last week because John Lydon was there signing autographs. The new album sucks and he's gotten ugly with age.

Not crap for their first handful of albums. Waffles to their stadium rock/pop crap and heavyhanded, kitschy image. Good Halloween music, actually. If there's still anyone outside around you, see what the kids think of Metal Box.

... No-one has ever come close to Levene in terms of playing the non-square, non-bourgeoisie, harmonically hip guitar wash...

but does Wobble write like a fucking cunt or what.

Saw them last night at FFF and thought they were better than passable, including new songs that fairly held their own against the older pieces.
