plus, and this is the kicker, after listening to say, automatic midnight, put on the wipers "youth of america"...

voila - instant hot snakes! it's uncanny. i didn't believe it either until my friend did the switcheroo on me and i said "which hot snakes record is this?, oh shit...."

still, not crap. extra credit for knowing when to pack it in.

amazing live band.

agreed with all of the above, except none of the observations above diminish the rocking awesomeness enough to qualify as a waffling factor for me.

hot snakes are the reason i make sure to get off my ass and see a band i want to see when they are in town. i fucked up multiple times being lazy, and as a result never saw them live.

NY made me lazy like that. it seemed like bands i wanted to see would play here all the time, giving me excuses to "see them next time." One "next time" too many and you fucking blew it. when i lived in Olympia i would drive to Portland to see a show, and if the band played in town, i sure as fuck was going.

Hot Snakes were great. I never saw them. That reminds me to give a fuck.

I don't think I like this band. I have one album. It's yellow. I don't know what it's called, but I put it on every once in a while and every time he starts singing I just think: yuk. But I don't turn it off. I listen to the whole album. I think it's all in my subconscious memory. I'm supposed to like them so I'm not gonna vote crap yet.

It's a shame you can't hear John in these clips. Such a downstroke warrior with Hot Snakes.

This is probably the best Hot Snakes clip on YouTube:

Anyone else think Froberg is a really underrated lyricist? I do!

I was at that show- wearing the grey Mission Of Burma t-shirt positioned at the front of the stage directly facing Rick. I still have the setlist. This show was also my first introduction to Silkworm, who were fantastic. I specifically remember having my eyes fixated on the mighty Michael Dahlquist, wearing his gardening gloves and pounding the shit out of his enormous drums during their entire set, but I digress...

So, any love here for U.S. Mint ?

I saw Hot Snakes years and years ago in London. Had the good fortune of meeting them loading in and Froberg was really polite, despite the fact that me and my friends sort of fanboy'd out over meeting him. He's a polite, unassuming chap. When we saw them play later, I was about two feet in front of him and I was blown away by how loud and raw his voice is. No idea where it comes from.

I was at that show, must've been about October '04. They played more or less the entire A sides of all their records, in order.

I think there was some Tequila vs Band issues with that show that ended up with my mate's amp getting trashed. An amp that's for sale now coincidentally, if anyone enjoyed the tones on offer at said gig.

I have religious zealotry favorable to any band on the Rocket from the Crypt family tree. This zealotry is unconditional. A bad song, a bad record, a bad show, a bad career move. Don't care. Unconditional zealotry.
That's not entirely true.

Also, John Reis refers to Sonic Youth as 'The Grateful Dead' which is funny and not crap.

Postby Mama Clortho on Mon Aug 02, 2010 7:50 pm

Suicide Invoice is a perfect rock album. Automatic Midnight is very good, though I could do without the song that John Reis sings. Salton City has always been my favourite song - it may be because it was the first song I heard, but I always thought it had "hit potential" if someone like the White Stripes recorded it.

Audit in Progress I don't like at all. I saw them on their Australian tour - I'm pretty sure these were the last shows that they did. Everyone but John Reis seemed really bored and burnt out. The only time Froberg seemed into it was when they played a DLJ song at the end of the set. I never bothered with the live album they recorded here for this reason. Is it good/worthwhile?

I agree with everyone about Froberg having the best voice in rock - though, he seems to have lost the urgency that makes him so good in Obits and on Audit in Progress. Like Andrew, I also think he is a great lyricist, too.
