Atomizer has only one great song ( Bad Houses ) , and one mediocre song ( Bazooka Joe ) , and the live version of Cables is pointless.

yr insane.
no offense to SAF, because i think maybe i should have voted for it, but you can't dismiss any of the songs on atomizer.

MAYBE the live version of cables, but that album's playlist is kind of perfect.

Listened to Atomizer on the way home from work.

Fuck "Bazooka Joe" is such a good song.

Again, Atomizer!

Fucking takes the cake with some of the most willfully unpleasant music ever recorded.

There's nothing like "Fish Fry" on any other record.

"Songs About Fucking" by a whisker. It's a record that demands to be listened to as a whole...in fact, I'd say it's the perfect example of how to absolutely nail an album with regards track sequencing. In contrast, I always get a little fidgety listening to "Atomizer", and am often tempted to skip a track or two (usually Passing Complexion, if I'm honest).

I'd actually argue that Songs about Fucking isn't too well sequenced, and that's what made me pick Atomizer over it. Something about the opening salvo of "Power of Independent Trucking" followed by "The Model" has always felt off and slightly wonky to me. Both are good songs, but I don't feel it's the best way to have opened. I'd always kind of wished the record had opened with "Bad Penny" instead.

I guess I like the defined separation into two distinct sides of Fucking. Side one slams in and ramps up brilliantly to "Colombian Necktie", whereas side two ebbs and flows a little more, bringing in the light and shade that side one eschewed. I think Steve has gone on record saying he was much happier with side #1 than side #2, but as a whole I like the contrast.

Also, I've only ever owned this LP on vinyl, so I'd agree that it really doesn't benefit from having "He's A Whore" tacked on.

Honestly, I'm a little surprised this is not a landslide one way or the other.

I llike "Songs..." just fine, but "Atomizer" is a far greater record. Mr Chimp put it brilliantly. "Atomizer" sounds more impressive to me, the songs are stretched out more frequently with incredible effect, I prefer the riffs on it, and I prefer the song structures. Plus, it has "Kerosene", "Fists of Love", "Passing Complexion", "Jordan, Minnesota" and "Big Money" which none of the songs on "Songs..." get close to for me. "Songs..." is nastier, I'll give it that. But "Atomizer" is more intense and has their best songs.

Songs was my first exposure to Big Black, but what made me a fan was Atomizer, so, the latter. I agree that the way the record opens is just off, probably because of The Model as track two.

Bad Penny is my favourite BB track, though.
I play guitar in Elma. Listen here or download the record for free here.

Atomizer

...mostly for what H-GM said. It sounds more...of it's time and place I guess. More of the Naked Raygun/Breaking Circus/Rifle Sport blow to the stomach than Songs (which I love anyway)

NOT a thread about the best BLACK FLAG song!
