There were moments off of 'The Downward Spiral' that I really liked ('A Warm Place' 'March of the Pigs' 'Hurt' ) but overall, Reznor's really got his head up his own ass and has created a lot of crap. I thought _The Fragile_ was a turd solidified. That's when I realized that NIN was basically just music for your "I hate the world" phase back in seventh/eight grade. You get over it, move on. I really feel bad for someone in their 30's who thinks that NIN is cool.

CRAP. Trite music for children/cock rock with synths, and nowhere near as "interesting" as his fawning admirers would have you believe. I certainly enjoyed his records up until I was about 15 years old, but it wore thin quickly, even when I was at an impressionable age and more likely to fall for the brand of angsty bullshit he peddles. For several years after being completely sick of his records, I didn't sell them just in case I ever wanted to listen to them again for some reason (nostalgia, probably). I've since sold them, after realizing this would never happen. A couple of neat noises on a couple of mediocre, unintentionally hilarious albums do not constitute worthwhile listening. Plus, he has butchered every song he's covered, and these are often great songs. WTF?

I went to a Bowie show in St. Louis in 1995, for which Prick (NOT CRAP) were the openers, and NIN were the co-headliners. I was appalled (though not surprised) by the huge percentage of jackasses in the sizable crowd left after NIN played. Fine by me. Bowie (who I was actually there to see) played a great set filled with a bunch of Low, "Heroes", Lodger, Scary Monsters, and (unfortunately) Outside stuff. I am still a Bowie fan.

Tolerable things about Nine Inch Nails:

(1) comedic value
(2) inexplicable association with Coil and Foetus, who were/are great
(3) that drum pattern in "March of the Pigs"
(4) good choice in songs cover songs (negated by terrible execution of same)
(5) vanity label released/distributed good records (Plug, Autechre, Plaid, Prick, etc)

two things i'll give him credit for.

1) making "industrial music" into a mainstream thing with Pretty Hate Machine).

2) making "drum n bass" into a mainstream thing with the song/video for Perfect Drug (and yeah dipshit i know he didn't even come close to inventing it).

in general, meh. i liked some of the songs on pretty hate machine a lot back then, and some i still do. i liked some of the songs on broken a little back then and probably still do though i dunno cause it's been a long time. i thought Suck was one of the better songs on the first Pigface album. but other than these things, i dunno, meh. i don't like electronic music in general, so...

Main pro: Pretty Hate Machine.
Main con: introducing the world to Marilyn Manson.

Those are both pretty big for me. Still, that pro beats that con, and I think his lesser pros beat his lesser cons, so I say Not Crap.

i don't wanna take this thread too far off-topic, but placeholder, have you ever seen the Super Mario 2 "time attack" video that's out there? it's basically a kid winning the game as quickly as is humanly possible. in fact, it's so perfectly executed that i question whether or not it's really a human doing it...

Is anyone familiar with the Santa Cruz band "Estradasphere"?

They used to do all the various musical excerpts from the Mario games. They had the Theme, Underwater, Underworld, etc....
All arranged and performed flawlessly.

Whoa! I haven't seen this, but would like to. I HAVE seen video of a "perfect" game of Gradius V played by this Japanese guy, which is a total mindblow.

TMH, is the video the U.S. Super Mario 2? Because the Japanese SMB2 is a totally different game (using the SMB1 engine) and is unbelievably difficult. I'd like to see a time attack video of that. Either way, it sounds impressive to me.

the downward spiral: ridiculously intricate sound design. Great concept album at the time (I was 14), so not crap.

live tour now: hand clapping above the head and yelling "let's go!" while singing hits songs about hate and gloom: total crap.

not crap for nostalgic purposes (barely).
