Not crap.

Havent really listened to them in a while. First time I heard of them was when they opened for Sonic Youth. They were really good. But I think, if they're still together, they're yet to make their best album.

(also, I think this poll's been done)

Not Crap

Unlike all these Interpols and Franz Ferdinands, Liars are actually updating the Gang of Four post-punk sound, not copying it.

I really loved "they threw us in a trench"

I really hated "they were wrong"

It may have had something to do with the lineup changes, but I just can't listen to "they were wrong."

shit's gross to me.

It probably has more to do with it being a complete piece of shit from start to finish.
Trench is a good record.

really?

I think it's captivating and the beats are woozy. I love the mood of that record. The pretention works for me and the vocals are pretty enough.

the song where the internet dial-up service does a solo? so cool and dorky.

It'd probably sound good in headphones.

to me.

For me, I can hear what they were trying to do, and they did a real shitty half assed job at it.

What, in particular, are they trying to do with that last album? What is there to criticize as shitty or half-assed?

Cause here's my take: I don't hear a neo-nowave wankfest at all, ie, I don't hear DNA or MARS or any other blank/ding/bloinky type stuff.

I don't really hear deconstruction going on either, becuase it doesn't seem as if they started with a SONG and then thought "hey let's fuck this really neat riff/beat thing up by adding patchbay bullshit" or anything like that.

I'd like to hear what it is they were trying to do with the last album.

I've listened to it literally dozens of times and I still don't know if I like it or not.

The first record and the split record are fucking great. The bass player, I liked him a lot.

They're trying to annoy people with their music, it makes them laugh to no end.

Man. Sorry. I totally missed the mark...here I was taking this dipshit seriously! Christ on a crutch! I actually put thought into my Liars post, too. What the hell's THAT about?

I should read more post around here!

PS: I bought the D/A record, kerble. I think it's really neat. I say this publicly because of this very fact alone: it's good!

Nice work to you and your bandmate.

What I ment was, it sounds to me a very lazy record. It sounds like they were going for the 'just hit record and go' feel, some bands pull that feel off very well. They don't one bit, them trying to sound like they don't give a fuck sounds to me like they give way too much of a fuck. Ya dig? Not one idea comes together, it all just peters out without ever going anywhere. It feels too much to me as if they made a sloppy boring 'experimental' record on purpose, out of some goofy new york band fear of becoming too successful or popular.

The Liars are no good. No good at all. Their last album, the "experimental" one, is nothing but proof positive that they don't know what the fuck they're doing except trying too hard. Bunch of shit.

CRAP.

I couldn't stop listing worse albums than They Were Wrong.. from 2004. The Rolling Stone zero star rating was the best thing that ever happened to them. Better than just more 2.5/3 star faint praise.

Liars do sound lazy and loose, but it's what I kinda like about them (I stress "kinda.") They're like an impatient self-deprecating early Cabaret Voltaire.... "PZZZZZZT PZZZZZZZT here's some words PZZZZZT to our song PZZZZZZZZZZT it might suck"

Hardly great, but hardly shitty.

And yeah, it was obvious, but the Einsturzende album deconstruction made me chuckle for a bit.

Not Crap :WF: eeeh, mmm, 4?

(The Cripples are about 100 times better though, even at the Liars' best.)
