I'll give it one more listen tonight, my man, for you. But I make no promises!

Look, if you don't like Lydon's vocals, that's that and you're probably not going to like PiL.

Do you still want this? Both sides of the Death Disco 12" are incredible..
On the John Lydon best of DVD there's a ten minute version as well as two alternative mixes for Albatross, but I have no equipment to rip and upload them.
I am also the man for PiL bootlegs from the 70s and 1980 if anyone wants them. I uploaded them on the Sendspace thread aaaaages ago.

In this extensive article Greg Whitfield covers the origins of the Dub / Punk crossover from Jamaica to London. PiL and their entourage feature heavily throughout; along with the likes of Jah Shaka, Adrian Sherwood and Lee Perry, and bringing the story up to date with London's Disciples and More Rockers.
The whole article comes from a fresh perspective, and doesn't simply retread the usual "punky-reggae party" bollocks. For example, among the 'PiL' subjects covered are John's trip to Jamaica, The Steel Leg EP, and the often ignored PiL / On-U-Sound crossover. PiL / Dub fans will love it…

ctrl-s wrote:The bass on "Albatross" makes me queasy. (Simon Reynolds refers to this as the arsequake effect.) How did they do that? I seem to recall something about them having the bass amp facing a wall at close range and recording the sound from further away in the room.
"Careering," 1980 (YouTube). Love that screechy Prophet synth.
I recently saw a DVD with a segment of the Tomorrow Show in, I think, 1979, with Levene and Lydon. I had forgotten how RIDICULOUSLY, HILARIOUSLY hostile and UTTERLY up their own asses they were. Snyder all but called them toolboxes. Also at the first closeup of Levene my friend cracked up and said "Oh no, HE'S not on heroin, no way."
Not crap!

I love that band like I love breathing but Christ what a bunch of pretentious schmucks.

That may be true, but Tom Snyder was such a no nothing talking head idiot who had no idea what the band was about, that hostility from the band was pretty much a given, and totally expected. I remember watching it when it was originally broadcast, it was wonderful watching a tool like Tom Snyder being fucked around with.

That was actually done as an attempted publicity stunt for the show. They showed a clip of some nobody punk band saying Lydon was a sellout to try get him to repeat the Grundy incident somewhat with the Pistols.
The "sorry, rude word" followed by the eye roll is perhaps the coolest thing ever, and Wobbles's bleeping rant makes me laugh whenever I watch this.
I'd rather Public Image act like a bunch of cunts to an interview than be all nicey nice or even take the piss or whatever, I mean you're meant to rebel against something aren't you?
