He gave an incredible talk at my school the other evening. He didn't say anything new, but he said it well, and it was all things we needed to hear. If you vote CRAP, you'll have to work hard to justify it to me.

I've seen him speak a couple of times. I'd be hard pressed to think of anyone who can captivate and audience as well as Dr. West. Highly engaging, intelligent as fuck, gave Summers the finger and left Harvard, spoke out against Obama's Nobel Prize. He does a decent job of walking his talk, from what I can tell. The one area I'd like to see him become more vocal is in his dissatisfaction with the current administration. He touches on it frequently, but I think his friendship with Obama prevents him from being as forthright about his objections as he is with all other subject matters.

His new radio show with Travis Smiley has been good the few times I've heard it.

And damn! Dude pulls off the 3 piece suit like no other (with the exception of Faiz, of course).

And you know, I'm white, male and middle class, so I really don't have a foot to stand on as far as any kind of moral coutcry, and that's not how I want to come off. But it seems a particularly odd thing to attach to West, considering.

I like his substance but dislike his style.

I feel like he's mocking or talking down to his audience, what with the exaggerated gestures, ostentatious appearance (the clothes, but the 'radical' hair, too) and his preachin'-style showboating.

Obviously likes being a celebrity, which is pretty crass. I just always feel like he's much more into himself than he is the issues. Maybe he really thinks that's the way to draw people into the discussion, I don't know.

Opposition to Free Market fundamentalism is not necessarily anti-Capitalism either. It just means that a person is opposed to markets without rules. I think you misunderstand what he is saying in the quote.

How exactly is that applicable to your dislike of him for taking money for speaking engagements?

And you are aware that "capitalism" isn't broadly defined as "free market" by default?

I remember seeing a talk of his during the 2000 presidential race endorsing Nader and it was a really good speech. I bought the Cornel West Reader later on that year and it was mostly a bunch of christian philosophical gobbledegook with a few good points interspersed throughout on left-liberal politics and why race matters in public debates.
