Not crap but insane waffle factors.
He's not crap for being a very good producer who knows how to make things sound good despite most of it being electronics and synths. He is also a good arranger; "A Warm Place" is a fantastically arranged instrumental piece on
A Downward Spiral. He also has some really great sounding instrumental remixes of
Spiral tracks on those
Further Down The Spiral remix compilations done by him and then-members of the NIN line-up. He also gets not crap for giving good WARP artists (then restricted to being England-only I believe) some US exposure with signing them to Nothing.
His songs though, other than "Hurt" are incredibly grating to my ears now that I'm no longer in middle school. I think what really killed it for me was going to see him live at the Wolstein Center here in Cleveland on the Fragile Tour. $45 for crap seats and then dealing with $30 t-shirts, A Perfect Circle opening, and some other bullshit. He is also crap for bringing us Marylin Manson.
Every time my father, an abstract painter by trade, hears mention of Nine Inch Nails, he points out that their logo is incredibly well designed.
This is dead on. I'd like to see a band logo that can top the NIN:
