RIP Tim Mooney (Sleepers/Toiling Midgets/Negative Trend)

Postby OrthodoxEaster on Fri Jun 15, 2012 8:01 am

The superb and idiosyncratic drummer for three of San Francisco's finest punk bands in the '70s and '80s--the Sleepers, Negative Trend, and Toiling Midgets--has died. Later in life, he played in American Music Club and became a pretty solid recording engineer, as well. Condolences to those who knew him and/or appreciated his work.

His heart stopped. The heart of the engine powering the best music to come out of San Francisco.

I heard about this today as well. A very, very good drummer. I've never listened to the Sleepers or Toiling Midgets that much, but I like both bands and their (quite different) music, and this is a bummer. Mooney had a quite personalized rhythmic feel, which is something I wish more drummers had. RIP.

Hi,

Tim's family contacted us saying that the cause of death has been undetermined.

Aw, man. What a complete bummer.

Sea of Unrest is one of my favorite albums ever recorded.

That quote stuck with me ever since you typed that, Jordan. Makes an odd amount of sense when you've burned enough Toiling Midgets into your brain.

RIP, Tim Mooney.

Paul Hood's story about his start with Toiling Midgets revolves a lot around Mr. Mooney and can be read here.
yeah? well, drip, drip, drip, drip, drip, drip.
fuck most things.

My apologies to the family for causing any additional anguish during this time; a mutual acquaintance told me something that is apparently not confirmed.

There is a facebook page set up to collect information on how to help Tim Mooney's wife and daughter. This includes a PayPal link to the Tim Mooney Memorial Fund and a Meal Train link to coordinate bringing food to the family.

AMC are without doubt United States of America’s best kept secret. I had the absolute pleasure of seeing them at a very small venue in Nottingham a few years ago. The music was simply awesome. I am saddened by the news of Tim’s passing. You will always be remembered!
