Neil young's PONO player

Postby shineonstudioswv on Sun Dec 30, 2012 7:06 pm

I was just wondering if Steve and crew are excited about the pono player that Neil young is having developed?

IANSA nor do I recognize the existence of crews, but I know nothing of this PONO player, and I really like knowing things about Neil Young.

Tell me about PONO player? What it is?

If it functions as a kind of high-res Spotify or subscription service where I can listen to every song in the world in my car or at work without having to own it or carry it around on my phone, I'm down. But if I have to buy some stand alone gadgets for my car or whatever, then screw it.

Was just talking with some friends about this.

We all love Neil Young. We all want to give him money, in the small ways that we can, etc.

And we all came to the conclusion: this business will really have to sound awesome to succeed. And by that I mean: sound awesome in the context of listening to music in my car, etc.

That is to say, in my opinion any real audio snob will insist on all kinds of things (vinyl records, analog equipment, etc.), and the rest of the people on earth won't give a damn. In other words, what his thing will need to do (full disclosure: I know almost nothing about it): be as convenient and economical as "Spotify on an iPhone" (for use in cars or walking around). . .

Fuck it. I'm not going to continue to speculate, because every avenue I can run down in my mind makes this thing a total failure.

And I don't want that to be true. And, also, the iPod seemed like a total failure to me before it was real. Probably the iPhone, too. Etc.

I have no idea how this could possibly work, but I'm hoping it does, somehow.

OK!

I don't know. I want this to be awesome and I love Neil Young, but I'm pretty much the target consumer (discerning, lazy, suspicious of and slightly intimidated by downloading music from the internet, willing to pay modest sums to have my tastes flattered, my laziness described as efficiency, and my tech-fears described as do-gooder conscientiousness) and I'm not excited about this at all.

Yes. My friends and I, discussing this, were immediately enthused. And then, the next thought was: this will have to sound so much better than a high-quality MP3 (etc.) to even be considered.

I don't know. Low-quality streams on Spotify, in my car, sound pretty good -- that is to say, roughly as good as the mix tapes I used to listen to in my car on cassette...

If I'm at home and really want to listen to something, I'll put on a record. You know, a vinyl record...

Willing to give him a try, but I fear this will not be A Thing.

From what I gathered when I read about it a while back, it's sort of his own version of say, a SHN or FLAC file, only in DVD-Audio quality, or Blu-Ray audio (if that's a thing / better) or whatever.

18 year-old me would have known all the specs and would have been dying to get the best player the day it came out, etc.

28 year-old me would have kept close tabs on it, then waited and waited to buy a player, and then would have never bought one because he didn't wanna feel fucked 2 months after buying one and then seeing a better one come out.

38 year-old me has a cat that clawed away the foam surrounds on his stereo speakers and has since said, "Fuck it, I'll just listen to music at work", and only hears music at home while occasionally listening to something on bandcamp or watching shit on YouTube, which comes through two Altec Lansing satellites and a sub that needs to always be at -10 to sound nearly normal.

I don't give a fuck, Neil.

Yes. And the high-quality Spotify streams sound better than most CD's mastered in the 90's, vinyl when played on the shitty speakers I had throughout my 20's, and every song on the radio. And seriously, the Cheater Slicks and feedtime are gonna sound appreciably better (or worse) in another format?

MP3 library on my phone working great. Youtube on my phone as a way to listen to random stuff I wanna hear but don't have on my phone, mostly working great but sometimes missing the mark with some songs being unavailable. So, as far as music media, there isn't really anything that I need other than access to a free Internet library of every song I might ever feel like listening to. Other than that, there's no point in anything new.

I have a feeling they'll incorporate pono with the second volume of the archives.

From the Pono Wikipedia article (you're in luck--Flea weighs in).

Young has publicly expressed concern about digital sound quality, criticizing in particular the quality offered by Apple's iTunes Store.[7] "My goal is to try and rescue the art form that I've been practicing for the past 50 years," he said.[8]

Some say that differences between Pono and other formats will be subtle, coming into play during the process of sound engineering (and not simple listening).[9][10] However, Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers said "It's not like some vague thing that you need dogs' ears to hear. It's a drastic difference."[11]

There has been criticism against the idea of distributing music in this format from various people, mostly from professional audio engineers ranging from claiming the simple fact that humans cannot hear the difference between 16-bit 48KHz format and 24-bit 192KHz format to that actually listening to music in 24-bit 192KHz format will have worse playback fidelity compared to Redbook CD quality 16-bit 44.1KHz or 16-bit 48KHz since most hardware used for audio playback will experience distortions when trying to reproduce ultrasonic content humans cannot hear and what audio hardware therefore isnt designed to reproduce in the first place.[15]

I'm reminded of this thread.

Hey everybody thanks for your input on this matter. I for one think the pono player will not be taken seriously (Sad). The reason being that the general population are drooling zombies who do not know the difference between analog & digital anyhow. the one feature I personally am excited about (if this product really becomes available to laymen's like us) is the revealer button Neil talks about it in his new book Waging heavy peace. The revealer button when you press it compares the puretone of pono with lesser formats such as CD's and MP3's. Im 35 going on 36 & I hate to sound typical but WE ARE A DYING BREED!!!
most people out there don't really listen to quality anymore (check out this cat playing keyboard on youtube) right? sad that some people just want background noise to there redundant lives. and to pay for music with higher quality sound? Why you ask? It's like why does Steve record using only analog tape? It just getting dithered down through digital software compressed to hell and makes us all want to get in fetal position and tell the doctor please be gentle.........

Or maybe the large majority of people thinks digital music sounds completely fine to them and don't see any benefit of higher quality when 95% of their music playing is in the car, on computers speakers or with cheap headphones. I've invested a lot of time and money in music over my lifetime but honestly think that Spotify/Rdio sounds completely fine to me. If that makes me a drooling zombie, so be it.

A "dying breed" that never actually existed in the first place, not as anything but the small niche clique it is today. HiFi systems were on average pretty shitty all by themselves, I mean sure high end HiFi has been around for decades, but on average, music playback systems have always been crappy if you think about it. Vinyl used to be king, sure, but was the nominal listening system back then better than the nominal listening system of today? Was it as capable of full-range audio? How about the car experience, which is immeasurably important for rock and roll and its history? Do you think that AM radio or 8-track was better than a modern MP3 or streamed internet audio through a modern car stereo? 1940's car stereos were all tube, don't forget.

You say you're in your 30's and you're part of a dying breed, but by the time you were listening to music the cassette was already supplanting the record.

And the 70's was all disco and shit.

The audio purist thing was never popular and it never will be. It's not like it's something that's on the decline. Fact of the matter is, the vast majority of people just want to listen to music. They don't give a shit about grasping for idealized fidelity. There's no point for 99% of people, because they prefer music to production values.

Doesn't excite me at all. The technology exists to compress the shit out of files and have them sound like they aren't compressed. That's the way to go. After the convenience of the iPod there's no going back for portable music to something that can hold so little.

Personally, I can't tell the difference between a CD and an mp3 ripped at 192kbps with VBR.

Again thanks for your input everyone. I know this is going to sound dumb but I actually love the sound quality of the factory stereo that came with my '06 toyota camry it rocks for real! I listen back on all of the recordings I've done in that car and it is kind of like the mastering hub for all that I record. Just wish I could hook up the ol' reel to reel to it some how HA! can you imagine? God speed....
