Best "Going Insane" Album

Postby Mandroid2.0 on Wed Nov 02, 2005 10:12 am

I'm with my dad:

The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds

I also enjoy Bob Dylan's "Blood On The Tracks" and any P.J. Harvey. I'm certain that I'm forgetting some obvious material that I love. (Oh, and the Neil Young live recording from Vancouver that almost broke up my parents' marriage. That one's awesome and totally worth my dad starving everyone for a week.)

Go!

*note: I'm likely about to flunk out of college in a mere 3 hours. Until then, we party on wine and ignore this fact.

i'm not sure i feel right in replying to this thread.

please be more specific: albums which spur insanity? albums which document the musician's descent into insanity?

i think you mean the former.

the postal service's give up is a heck of a thing to listen to if you're having marital strife, i cn tell you that.

Soundtracks to insanity. I wish that I could think of a better way of phrasing it. "Insanity" isn't even the right term. "Uncertainty" or "destined failure" would be more appropriate, really.

What I'm looking for is the best album to accommodate that general feeling of losing it, personally.

For myself, Ornette Coleman's Tomorrow is the Question or some good frantic Rachmaninoff would do it.

Steely Dan would be the ideal soundtrack for the murderous rampage to follow.

God, I hate Steely Dan.

I have been committed on four separate occasions and have always thought Spiderland was a very good musical representation of the decent into insanity. Labradford's Prazision and various Stars Of The Lid tracks are good too.

richard buckner “devotion and doubt” as far as the person writing the music going insane.

Some Flying Luttenbachers? Destroy All Music?

I've always imagined that my world will fall apart to the sound of the Nancy Sinatra/Lee Hazelwood classic 'Some Velvet Morning'.

"Rimbaud, as your doctor I have to tell you that my scientific tests have yielded a cockpunch of a result. Look at this graph; you're 80% useless and about the only thing going for you is how ill you are! You have AIDS, ovarian cancer, a brain tumour AND mild retardation! They'll give me a Nobel for my work with you!"
"No! NOOOO! I CAN HEAR THAT MUSIC."

There are several Jandek records that would fit the bill.

Skip Spence's "Oar."

That double live Fushitsusha CD would work.

More later.

I don't think god is listening. If god were listening, s/he/it would have heard my pleas to give all of Steely Dan terrible syphillis long ago.
