Holy moly. Now that IS bad. All the arguments against doing a cover, or doing a cover of a really popular song, or doing a loud song quietly, are conveniently encapsulated in this performance.

The piano gets used horribly, doesn't it? Between this and the Sound of Silence cover intro, it's enough to initiate rounding up all pianos and smashing them. When some dick thinks "I want class, I want gravitas, I want sincerity", the dick's subconscious/bandmates/producer says "piano, mate! That's what you want."

I love pianos, but clearly so do the legion of dicks.

I hear you Dudley, although I'm posting this just to prove it's possible to do a good piano cover of Smells Like Teen Spirit, should the mood ever take you or anyone else.

I much, much prefer Fine Young Cannibal's "Suspicious Minds" to Elvis' and it is 100% because of Roland. It's still a horribly written song, but at least the vocals don't remind me of Vegas schmaltz. Sorry King.

I don't like The Beat. I'm not sure I even like The Beat as they are in FYC. But I love Roland's voice.

I can't think of a band more mismatched for "Fortunate Son" than U2, especially Achtung Baby-era U2.

But this is a cover that actually exists.

I heard the entire song. She sings "I am the Antichrist, I am Sporty Spice." No joke.

ALL IN FAVOR OF LOCKING THIS THREAD?!

Easy there, I couldn't hear that potentially award winning verse in that video.

I kept forwarding it, 10 seconds or so at a time, to see if it got any better than the first two seconds, and it most certainly only got worse. That was positively awful.

I'm pretty sure "these guys are from England, and who gives a shit?" should have been the world's response to this band, really. Even if they're actually Irish.

Mel C doing "Anarchy?" Fuggit, prefab meets prefab. Whatever.

This, on the other hand:

There are worse bands than U2 in this thread. There are better songs than "Fortunate Son" being pissed on in this thread. However. For the sheer gulf between the band and the song; and for the extent to which the performance is just THAT FUCKING HORRID... Mike wins. This is just a turd.

Awesome bands Korn and Slipknot join their forces to play 'Sabotage'.

This is what killed MCA.

If recordings of these shows exist, they must surely be the worst recorded covers ever.

I'm ten years too late, but Robert Palmer covering "New Day Rising".

Bananarama's version of Shocking Blue's Venus was awful, and I was going to nominate that, but I saw a razor "for women" commercial with a modern interpretation of it the other day that made the 80s butchering seem almost palatable.
