Upcoming shows in Chicago

Postby Angus Jung on Mon Sep 11, 2006 12:35 pm

There are several shows coming up, all at the Empty Bottle, featuring bands that are good.

Bands that I have heard and know are good, or haven't heard and suspect are good, are in bold. The other bands on these bills might be good, too.

None of these bands sound like Tar, Tad, Tap, Top, Tip, or Taz.

Friday, 9-15
Otto
Dengue Fever

Wednesday, 9-20
Tim Hecker
Rhys Chatam's Essentialist
Jandek

Thursday, 9-21
Edan
Badgerlore
Hive Mind
Coughs

Friday, 9-22
Tetine
Colleen
Yellow Swans
Spires That In The Sunset Rise

Saturday, 9-23
Om
Subtle

The Punks (you probably won't like The Punks, but they will probably only play for about 10 minutes)
Paul Flaherty/Frank Rosaly Duo

Sunday, 9-24
Steinski
Hamid Drake/William Parker Duo
Trapist
Kayo Dot

Hey, there is also a big "world music" festival going on as well, at Logan Square. I bet a lot of that music is good, even though it is called "world music."

The term "world music": CRAP

Are OM better live than their records?

Their records are good, but I want their live show to compress my skull.

Hey -

If anyone's going to be at the Pelican show on Friday night, I'll be there. EA forum friends get one cheap beer on me each.

How will you recognize me? Hmmm. I'll be the nerdy looking white guy with glasses, probably in a black t-shirt. So that'll narrow it down to about 3/4 of the crowd.

Okay,

= Justin

PS - If Jay Ryan's there, I'll be the one stealing his wallet.

Hey I'll be there too. I will be the tall, bearded guy. I'll take a can of POINT, if they have it. Thanks!

I intend to be at the Pelican show tomorrow and to stop in at Double Door to see Quatre Tete tonight. Say hello.

I forgot to mention before, if the Pelican show at Subt sells out, you can try to get into their show the next night at the Beat Kitchen. Good luck.

Mission of Burma are playing at the Double Door on January 12th.

The chunk of pre-sale tickets that Burma had sold out (that's where I got my ticket), but I think the ones you can get through the Double Door website are still available.
I played a drum in Tijuana Hercules.

Here's a show for my band, Arks (and the new label we're on). It's free and it starts early. Highwheel Records is a brand new label in Chicago, one that I am proud to say I am a part of. New albums by my band and our sister band, Airiel, will be out by April. This is the kick-off to it all. So, come on by. You won't be disappointed.

Highwheel Record showcase at the Empty Bottle
Monday, January 22nd, 9:30pm (21+ | No Cover)

[The Empty Bottle] 'free Monday' series continues with a special Highwheel Records showcase. Highwheel is a Chicago-based label, one "focused on quality over quantity" that looks to release "state of the art records on a small scale." This particular outing will feature live performances by ARIEL and ARKS, both of whom are currently recording new full length records, and WALKING BICYCLES, who will be supporting their debut longplayer, Disconnected.

My good friends and partners in Califone will play this Friday, Jan. 19 at Hideout. Kind of a warm up and goodbye to the city show for their tour of Europe throughout the rest of January and February.

wish I had some of Gina's cool poster art to link to, but I don't....

Your band is really good......I like that video too...reminds me that I have to get my Jaguar fixed finally!

Is it the same singer on "Subtraction" and "The Center of All Things"?

Yeah, same singer. New drummer and a new (additional) guitar player for Subtraction. We're sorta growing up in the studio. The tracks we've recorded and are currently mixing for our new album...you'll be able to hear and understand the vocals!

Thanks for the compliments.

A free Arks show a block from my house on a night I have off? Sorry pal, can't do it. Just not convenient enough for me.
