Mathematical savants, also referred to as 'lightning calculators':
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mental_calculator

Sheldrake's Morphic Resonance model seems a really great fit for explaining idiot savant behavior. Though i admit I'm not sure what the popular explaination is among thee scientific establishment

contains this gem:

"Ebert noted, however, that the film "contains no evidence of Scientology, or any other system of thought.""

Possible duplicate, but I just learned of the Svalbard Global Seed Vault and I find it awesome and fascinating.

Wow. Guy gilled 28 people aged 12-20 over 3 years in Houston, the police had the report of him burring what looked like bodies and yet the police wasn't even looking for a killer, all the victims were considered as runaways until their bodies were found.

I read that too and the whole thing is incredibly fucked up. Their own friends! What an unspeakably horrible story.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_Shuttle_abort_modes

Space Shuttle abort modes, most of which were never used. Which kinda sucks, as the Transoceanic Lainding Abort would mean getting from Florida to Spain in 25-30 minutes which is all sorts of badass, abort or not.

Here's an article on the Return To Launch Site Abort which depending on the person was thought of as very dangerous or suicidal.

Edit:
Article about hypothetical rescue scenario for the Columbia shuttle mission. It is GREAT.

The international border between Sweden and Finland on the Island of Märket is unusual.

But still far shy of the complexity if the Baarle-Nassau border between the Netherlands and Belgium.

They have the opposite problem in Bir Tawil.

This is going to blow my cover on where we stole our side project name from, but it's worth it to have one person get sucked into the Endor Holocaust.

I think The Force Awakens adequately addressed all of the above points quite eloquently, by making the point that everything that happens in the Star Wars universe is such unbelievable bullshit that you shouldn't even and the Ewoks are fine because magic why not

I mean Starkiller base fucking seriously

I would not like to be responsible for buffing the floors of the Death Star.

I thought of the nerds.

Not just the nerds who write that science page The Finger Genius linked to (who must've looked at that Starkiller base and just gone OH FOR FFF...)

But also all the nerds responsible for turning Star Wars into role playing games and things like that, all carefully drawing up tables of how much all the different spaceships cost to build and estimated weights and how much metal are in them and all that super-important nerd stuff. And then JJ Abrams comes along and says OH HAI GUYS CHECK OUT THIS DERP MY BRAIN JUST FARTED OUT, IT'S ALL CANON NOW SO GOOD LUCK WITH THAT.

Although probably they are just glad they no longer have Lucas dropping into their office and decreeing THE NEW VILLAINS IN THIS STORY SHALL BE NAMED COUNT BADDIE AND DARTH POO-BUM.
