There is a deceased Canadian band named York Redoubt. The drummer, Noah used the extended side of his pedal to have the bass drum off to the right, so he could fit two floor toms in front of him and an extra snare where the floor tom would usually sit, kind of like Ginger Fish from Marilyn Manson. Regardless of his set up, he's an amazing drummer. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nzh-IN6UtWU

Another Canadian band with an amazing drummer is Special Noise. Easily one of the loudest drummers I've ever seen. They're also incredible dudes, total sweethearts. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Or7Onf2v0zc

Those two dudes definitely had a big influence on me.

last year i saw dave king w/ tim berne, craig taborn and david torn. it was late night, some kind of after party, and i think a lot of it was improvised. they got into some groove type stuff i couldn't get with, but king was delirious with possibilities and just going for broke. this is what steve lacy meant when he talked about "raising the bandstand".

The best drummer I've seen play in the last couple years was Christian Vander.

Doni Schroader, more recently of And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead. I used to see his previous bands, Fair Verona and Forget Cassettes, a lot in Nashville. In both bands, I recollect that he played a very small kit (something like 10/14/18) and played it like the individual drums had hurt his mother. (And while he had fewer opportunities to let rip in Forget Cassettes, he did occasionally play drums with one hand and keyboard with the other, simultaneously, on some of their songs. Which was impressive.)

I really can't say who the best drummer I've ever seen is, but the best one I've seen recently was Andrew Cyrille.

That man put intellectual content into every one of his rhythms. I can't really explain it well but I was enthralled.
Life...life...I know it's got its ups and downs.

In the someday, what's that sound.

Crover and Trainer are my favorites. But actually the best drummer I have ever seen was Tommy Clufetos (Black Sabbath End Tour). Just incredible.

Dale Crover, hands down. Cloud Nothings' drummer was also pretty amazing the couple times I've seen them live.
I sing and play bass in a band called Dori.

Maybe not the "best" drummer, but I fucking love watching Travis from Buildings play. Gives me joy.
Russell Emerson Hall. Throat torturer. Guitar abuser.
Current: Twelves and Bell & Circuit.
Ex: Tyranny Is Tyranny and United Sons of Toil.

Nick Yacyshyn (Sumac)
Stewart Copeland
Greg Saunier
Todd Trainer

Those are drummers who impressed me greatly when I saw them. Jimmy Chamberlain and Max Weinberg are two of my favorites who I liked before seeing them (and still do).
- "Whatever happened to that album?"
- "I broke it, remember? I threw it against the wall, and it like, shattered."
