Jason Bowld playing with Killing Joke a year or two ago was really impressive. At first I was disappointed that Big Paul wasn't on that tour, but Bowld really knocked my socks off.

Louisville is such a great town for drummers. You've got Kyle Crabtree, Britt Walford, Kevin Ratterman, Pat Hallahan and many others. I feel like Kyle hits a drum in a way that's all his own. And no one beat them like the late Tony Bailey.

I saw Adrienne Davies play with Earth this past Monday and she was god damn great. Just so restrained yet heavy.

The dude from Torche in 2007 was incredible. Just mercilessly attacked his kit. It must have moved halfway across the stage by the end. He kept getting up and pacing once or twice and sat back down. That kind of drummer.

Zeni Geva in 1996 of course.

The usual Dale Crover, Mac McNeily, Brendan Canty and Todd Trainer shows.

There were some pretty fantastic drummers around when I was living in Boston in the 1990s. Bands like Spore and Dagobah and Juneau and Moveable and the Wicked Farleys and Claymore and Michael Mancini and Bloodletter and Luca Brasi and La Gritona and Anodyne and Bright and the first Crack Torch drummer who turned out to be a douche who split town with the guitar players girlfriend. He referred to him ever after as "Skiptown". He was another get up and pacer.

Speaking of Boston I've seen Mission of Burma who has a great drummer.

FM El Protoolio, that Torche performance sounds amazing. There early stuff was pretty brutal. I'm fairly certain I've seen Adrienne Davis play with Earth twice now. She is really restrained in a great way.

She and Dylan together both serve the music in their ways and makes it huge. Perfectly complimented.

Charles Gocher Jr. (November 12, 1952 – February 19, 2007) was an American musician, writer and visual artist, most famous for being a founding member, lyricist and drummer of the experimental rock group Sun City Girls. He also released Pint Sized Spartacus, a solo album under his own name, in 1997. Charles lost his long battle with cancer on February 19, 2007 in Seattle, aged 54. The two other members of Sun City Girls, brothers Alan and Richard Bishop, embarked on a tour of the United States and Canada called "The Brothers Unconnected" in tribute to Charles' death, featuring showings of the man's video works and stripped-down, acoustic versions of selected Sun City Girls songs, including several tracks written by Gocher himself.

I'd post a clip but none I can find do him any real justice.

Did they set up on the floor in Chicago as well? Gal's a very nice guy - he came up to our drummer after the show and said: "Your drumming - amazing. Every hit like crack of thunder."

He works a lot out of a very small kit.

They always set up on the floor.

They actually set up in a small storeroom at the Double Door.

One of the best shows I have ever seen.

Best drummer? This 18 year old girl named Ruby who played in this Chicago band Haki until about a month ago. Jazz-trained but absolutely able to beat the shit out of her kit. Control, speed, innovative beats. She moved to Seattle to study jazz. I look forward to seeing what she does next.
The bandcamp doesn't really do justice to her live performances, but here: http://smile2.bandcamp.com/

I was also highly impressed by Whitney from Chung Antique at the BBQ this summer. Such control and restraint, making it look like nothing while pulling off complex shit.

Man, I fucked up by not actually being able to see Chung Antique's set at the BBQ - I could hear them pretty well but everyone I've heard talk about their set has said the same thing you did. These folks should get back out here sometime, if only so I can watch the drummer.

Seeing Andrew Becker play with Medications in 2005 was like watching a living Bonham. There are other clips up (including a Burn to Shine one) but none of them get as close to capturing it as this blown out clip:

Joey Waronker was a badass when I saw him with Walt Mink.

Han Bennink is probably the best I've ever seen, though.

Hope her next project is as cool as Haki!
