How do you like that Sansui?

I think I like the looks of the Au-x17 series slightly better, but there are a couple of AU5500s available right now that I am feeling tempted to push my budget up a bit for.

They're Cabasse, and there's two holes per speaker.

I need new cables anyhow (the set I have now is from college, which was back when the earth was still cooling) so keep the suggestions flowing.

ahh, good. so yes, banana plugs, available at any electronics store. Speaker wire - not to get too far into the audiophile realm, but just get some decent guage stranded copper stuff. something slightly bigger than a standard lamp power cord. That's all you really need. Like this:Image

Anything more is overkill. Make the wire runs as short as possible, but make them both exactly the same length.

A buddy of mine took in a very clean Marantz 1060 integrated. The case, face, knobs, and silk-screening are all in great shape, and the pots were all cleaned. It has been re-capped and some other things repaired to meet original spec.

He wants $160. This is in the Rockford area.

So I will be buying a new Hi-Fi when I move to Cali. and I would like to hear some thoughts and suggestions on specific models.

Here's what I'm looking at so far.

Turntable: cheap Technics turntable for less than or about $100. Any model suggestions?

Receiver: vintage Sanyo or Sansui receiver for about a $100.

Bookshelf Speakers: Bose 21's maybe?

Hoping to keep the whole setup under $250.

So I picked up a pair of early '70s Jensen Model 6 speakers, 4-way with a 15" woofer for $40.

Very nice looking, cool grilles, very heavy. They sound really nice with my old Sansui.

Never heard of them.

The SL-1200 is a really good direct drive turntable. Your budget might allow you to pick up a 2nd hand table. If its been used by a working DJ its probably gonna be beat up. You won't need to touch the pitch control. The plinth weighs a ton and you shouldn't have alot of acoustic feedback issues to deal with.

I had a pair of Jensen 2 ways in the late 70s. As I recall, I listened to lots of the big brands that Tech Hifi sold, such as Infinity, Ohm, CV, etc. The Jensen's sounded just as good for less dough. That system, with a little Pioneer reciever, got me through the start of college, until I upgraded with NAD separates and Snell E IIs, with a Linn LP-12 in front.

Bose = overpriced yuppie design CRAP. I had one of their high-end speaker sets for a brief while, but even their sentimental value (they were my grandmother's) couldn't keep them in my apartment. Effing lifeless for anything beyond classical chamber music.

I'm sure motorbike guy has way more suggestions than me, but here's what I've heard and liked in the past, and assume/think you can get fairly cheap on craigslist or ebay. (Whooah, nice run-on sentence there Mart.)

Audioengine A2 (note: active speakers)
Klipsch
Monitor Audio (British, so might not be that ubiquitous in the US)
Paradigm

And a friend just bought these for his office and is very pleased so far:

because Bose sucks, that's why.

I take offense at this comment. Bose are lifeless inaccurate CRAP for even and especially classical chamber music.

You want to make classical chamber music shine on a budget? Get some B&W bookshelves with a decent sized amp behind them, or even better, a pair of Magnepan speakers used and in good shape.

I stand corrected. :D That said, I think there was a brief point in time (before the entire company was overtaken and run by marketeers) when Bose actually put out some semi-decent stuff.

Much agreed on B&W, by the way.

Bose NEVER put out decent stuff... they always used some sort of BS science to design their shitty multi-driver boxes.

Nice set-up. I love the original Snell designs (J, K, and E). If you can get the earliest versions of these and have them refoamed they will provide you the most excellently musical experience you can own... save for paying the extra cash for the newer Audio Note versions with their silver wire and hi-price caps and stuff.
