I like everything I hear from this guy almost. Makes me want to do what he's doing...looks like fun. I think most dance music that i like comes from those that were either in bands or have a wide knowledge of other music.

Back in 2007 I wrote:The most recent electronic music to get me excited has been Stephan Bodzin and his sustaining farty/vacuum cleaner synth bass sounds.

This guy seemed to disappear sometime around 2008, I kept waiting for his next record which never came then I gave up.

Well, turns out he made a comeback in 2015. This week I have been mostly listening to...

Also, check out this creep-fest remix of one of his recent tunes:

probably my favorite mix from last year

i caught him DJ at smartbar last spring which incorporated a lot of elements from it and the whole thing was otherworldly.

March 31 was the 3rd anniversary of the death of Frankie Knuckles. I was listening to quite a bit of Frankie that weekend and was reminded of a song that I hadn't heard in over 30 years. In fact, if it were not for this song the early output of Frankie Knuckles & Jamie Principle would have sounded a lot different. Their most celebrated tracks, "Your Love" and "Baby Wants to Ride," were directly lifted from this bombass Italo joint. The sound is the bare minimum of disco. It might be difficult to realize how revolutionary it sounded back then, but it was subversive and raw. Pure rhythm. Gives me a big ol hard-on. House music is disco's punk rock.

I feel very awkward about blatant self-promotion, but here goes:

I do a weekly show on Radio NOPE ( http://www.radionope.com ) that is an hour of dance music (broadly defined). It's called Step to the Music, though my original idea for it was to call it "Actually Good" after this thread. In the past I've done dance rock, funk punk, electro-rock, techno, house, d******, grime, hip hop, gqom... currently I'm lost down a bit of a drum'n'bass k-hole (did you know there was an avant-garde wing of D&B? There totally is)

Anyway, you can listen Wednesday nights at 11/10C

Also, I'm always open to offers to guest host, if any of you fine folks have any interest in that. Let me know!

Also:

I've found FACT Magazine's monthly "For Club Use Only" column both interesting and enlightening.

http://www.factmag.com/tag/for-club-use-only/

There seems to be an as-yet-unnamed genre bubbling under the surface. Like Randall said early House music was the punk rock of disco, this stuff is like the punk rock of club music. To me, some of it sounds more like industrial music with afro/latin rhythms, just super noisy and aggressive. Some of it is really out there, (to the point of "is this even really dance music?") including stuff from Chicago's Swan Meat, who I saw perform at Berlin earlier this year.

Not very many mixes get posted here:

phpBB [media]

Chicago's Honey Dijon fucking KILLING it at SXSW. Killing it.

phpBB [media]

Chicago's Mark Farina laying down serious funky grooves in NYC. A bit more uptempo than his usual mushroom jazz series. Phenomenal. It was my favorite house mix until my ears caught wind of Honey's set in Austin. Both of the above mixes have been in serious rotation over the last year.

phpBB [media]

Hypnotic, hazy, and deep.

phpBB [media]

Soulful deepness, with classic piano-house underpinning.

phpBB [media]

Signing-off with a swinging banger. Impossible not to move. Way too many rhythms happening all at once. Limbs begin to move independently of each other. Complete dancefloor devestation. For house peoples.

^nice blending of disco and gospel house.

A year or so ago Format:B dropped a monster, chunky house jam called, well, "Chunky." Heavy on a sparse cowbell beat, a tinge of techno, and a 60s-ish vocal to get out on the floor, as it were. Loved it, and for some reason I had it in my mind that Format:B was a new thing. I definitely knew it was at least a proper house project because "Chunky" is house for days. Well, I guess they've been around for a while--2010 at least--and they work primarily in minimal techno, or minimal house, or tech-house, or MNML, or whatever. "Rabbit Hunt" from earlier this year is pretty rad on that front: dark, sparse, with those percussive elements that force you to dance. Sometimes minimal shit can get a little one-note for me, but when it hits it hits.

The selection of tracks is seriously impressive. All jackin' too. Straight house. Love the track she slips in at 19:45-- been trying to ID it for months. I'd swear it's called "I'm Twisted" but am getting nothing.

The track she blends in at 1:27:and some seconds is fire. Derrick Carter dropped it in his Pitchfork set. 22:30. So good.

How does a Pitchfork crowd outdance a Boiler Room crowd? Derrick Carter.
