You're probably quite right about the time period, but that's precisely the length of my existence thus far, it's quite hard to see outside of it. It was always a lot easier for things to crop up between the cracks- the aggressive legal shift against squats and squatting has really given that a kicking.

Recent studies have shown that on average people on salaries in greater london are now spending 2/3 of their income [pre-tax!!] on residential rent.

That is actually horrible for the economy, because it means that people simply don't have free time or disposable income.

As for what that does to people working in non-salaried roles, ie the arts, it simply doesn't stack up. It's incredibly toxic for the performing arts, not only do performers find it hard to survive, but the general public increasingly can't afford the time or money. That's bad for venues in a good few ways.

Unless you're doing private parties for Russian oligarchs or 'corporate team building events', that is.

I have seen a significantly deleterious change to underground operations in my lifetime, but it has definitely escalated in the past decade. Faceless corporate franchise stores with faceless staff on minimum wage abound. Most roads in central London now have anything up to six pret a manger stores?! It's getting strange.

However, there are some resulting short-circuits, such as this lot called "ANAL" turning the Gazprom CEO's unoccupied mansion into a homeless shelter: https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/201 ... ss-shelter

Cheers for all the info, Tommy Alpha. I had a few hours in the company of a certain Mr Cranius the other night, who recommended a few of the same. Tonight I'm heading to Brixton to break my Melvins cherry.

Note to say that this Saturday's Lords/Bilge Pump/Sweet Williams show at New River is changed slightly. Lords can no longer play due to family illness.
The gig is still going ahead. You can get a refund if you want (but you shouldn't, it's still going to be awesome) and 2/3 of us Lords are playing as Thee Viscounts instead. It'll be blast.
Online tix are sold out but there'll be some on the door if you're early.
