I love the bass playing on this album, this song in particular.
Maybe a little less yelling and a little more hugging.

I'd have to say pretty much anything played by Tim Midyett, Bob Weston, Geezer Butler, Mike Watt, PiL-era Jah Wobble. Some of the greatest and most tasteful bass players in rock, IMO.

Clint Conley doesn't play many "lines" per se, but he's one of my favorite bassists for his tone and approach. I guess "This Is Not a Photograph" and "Weatherbox" have distinctive bass lines. "Peking Spring," too.

This. This. THIS. You summed up my steez perfecto.

I mean, it's kind of like why I don't have any Kubrick movies in my top 10 fave films or whatevs. These peeps are just on a different level, so it's not fair, really, to compare to normal folk. Geezer Butler? Dude accomplishes on every level. Like, ridic. Superhuman. Supergodlike. "Supernaut." 'Nuff said...

Peter Hook (duh): "Ceremony," all Joy Division ("New Dawn Fades"?), "Age of Consent" beyond, "Dreams Never End" (oh, my), "ICB," "Leave Me Alone," "Weirdo," "Bizarre Love Triangle," "Regret"... I also love how all of Hook's basslines sounds like he just made it up at practice off the cuff... The G.O.A.T.?

Kira from Black Flag & Larry Graham also in here somewhere. Kira is just so... Kira. Larry Graham is not just the most talented bassist I've seen live - he's like the most talented musician I've ever seen, perhaps He's Hendrix's bass equivalent next to McCartney. And he is truly about bassLINES, not basswank. He has too many good basslines to list, tbh...

As for Clint Conley, I agree & disagree: I think he both really supports the song, but within that also did some absolutely iconic killer basslines in MoB. "Revolver" & "Academy Fight Song" basically live or die by those basslines - it's what makes them tip over into sublime.

Tim Midyett, meanwhile... Dude is great, every bassline delish, bass sound is absurdly present & fantastic, consistent from song to song. I could probably intellectualize other bass players in terms of historical significance, but probably my fave bass player on a visceral level. Could not pick a fave song/bassline - but if I was in a cell with a gun to my head, perhaps "Slow Hands"? Bob Weston in this zone as well. Per Silkworm, never met a Bob Weston bassline I didn't like. "Song of the Minerals" puts him in da hall of fame. I'll be writing a bassline & then I'll write one that I think is the best I've ever heard - & then I realize it's just fucking "Song of the Minerals" again.

I am going to nominate Dave Allen for "To Hell With Poverty" by Gang of Four. But then every single fucking thing that dude did in Go4 was iconic & just fucking amazing. A true hero of the low end.

I would also be hard pressed to pick my fave bassline from the many brilliant genius ones of The Ruts. Most underrated punk bassist ever IMHO: Alvin Gibbs of U.K. Subs. Basically the John Entwistle of second-wave punk rock. (If that description doesn't turn you on, I get it, but...) Listen to the "Endangered Species" album - "Plan of Action," "Living Dead," "Endangered Species," "Down on the Farm," "Countdown"... The U.K. Subs were always bass-driven ("Warhead," "Party in Paris," et al) but Gibbs took things to a whole other level. One of the unsung greats IMHO.

Okay, but best basslines EVER... Come from Dave Alexander on Stooges' Funhouse. Period. Done. "Dirt"? Fuggedaboutit? "Out on the Street"? Jeez, dude. Endless. Perfection. Human. Pocket of God.

Dave Alexander. Done.

Lee Sklar's drivin' ass bassline on Billy Cobham's 'Stratus' off of Spectrum. Then Tommy Bolin kicks in and all is fusion rock fantasticness. Exemplary.

This track has to be one of the greatest pro-sampling arguments ever:

I agree that it's a great bass line, but it's put to such better use elsewhere.

Came here specifically to post "Faint Heart," thought I should execute a cursory look through the thread to see if it had been posted, and came across what I am 99.9% sure is the very first post I made on EA back when I was calling myself "Tar Baby" in 2005. This was so far back it was pre "H-GM." I should have kept Tar Baby. Fantastic profile name, and badass avatar. So badass.

Still reppin' disco. Still a badass bass line. So badass.

Added a youtube link because I have particular feels about this one. Treacherous, funky, and sinuous bass line that gets fucked with subtly starting at 4:02 and it caves my dome in. The percussion quietly shakes and rattles and the dopeass chill deep house beat artfully knocks. And her voice--so goddamn black, soulful, and witchy. Would pair nicely with "Obeah Woman" by Nina Simone at 3am. Very cosmic. Ritual. A sacrament.

Ditto.

Actually, that entire tune is great top to bottom and still sounds fresh today. Everyone involved in that doesn't really get the credit they deserve(and Randy is practically the equivalent of patron saint).

Just for the "That Era Of Ozzy" kicks...

There's some spectacular bass playing all over Fairport Convention's "Liege & Lief," but this one is my favorite. Be sure to stick around for the coda, too:
