Bandcamp is a holy shit hell fuck bonkers crazy go nuts tool

Postby cneutron on Tue Apr 06, 2010 2:25 pm

Let me preface this by saying that I neither work for bandcamp, have sex with anybody that works for bandcamp or am I getting any kind of unsolicited kickback or reward from them at any kind. This is merely a community bulletin over something I find badass.

Much like a lot of you, I've been playing in bands for awhile, and for most of us that means a whole lot of grunt/crap work in the background that has very little to do with the actual playing of music. Therefore when a tool comes around that actually makes some of that grunt work easier, I get excited. When it turns out that it is a damn useful tool that is run by great and responsive people, well... I want to spread the word as best I can.

Bandcamp is one of those.

I guess the nutshell explanation is that it's a free third party site where you upload high quality .wav or .aiffs of your music, you set up a page with all of the information and either set it up for paid, sliding scale payment or free download in any form anybody could want. .aac, high quality mp3, .wav, Ogg Vorbis. FLAC... whatever!

There's also a really easy link to setup stuff for people to buy physical products that is one of the more elegant payment processes I've yet seen (warning: paypal required). I'm not kidding folks, Bandcamp has cdbaby licked in that regard.
From their own site:

Bandcamp isn’t Yet Another Place to Put Your Music. Rather, we power a site that’s yours. So instead of ads for Sexy Singles Chat, your fans see your design, your music, your URL. You retain all ownership rights, and we just hang out in the background handling the tech stuff.

Being one of the people that ALWAYS found myspace abhorrent, and really have gone to any level possible to avoid putting people at Murdoch's site, I have to say... bandcamp fucking rules.

To say nothing of the super easy flash players that they allow you to download and embed in blogs, websites or really anywhere with custom code.
They give you analytics data, they let you set creative commons rights

I had a few minor issues of craziness to deal with, all on my side I might add, and not only was their customer service fast... they literally changed things up for me for the better without asking just to be helpful.

They are setting up a sort of directory thing, ala mp3.com but not retarded. No idea if that will catch on, but as a digital file delivery service, it's god damn holy shit hell fuck bonkers crazy.

If they can somehow manage getting into the itunes store and physical distribution they'll have discmakers/cdbaby/super D licked in no time at all.

Again, from their site:
We provide fast, dependable streaming and downloads of your entire catalog, adorn your tracks with all the metadata they need to sail into iTunes with artwork, titles, and so on intact, and mutter the various incantations necessary to get your site top-ranked in Google. All things we know you could do, but we suspect you’d rather focus on your music. Well, think of us as your invisible bandmate who loves that other stuff. And we won't even ask to play tambourine.

I don't know man, maybe it's that I'm getting older and cranky, but I feel like shaking my fist at the various web 2.0 options for music these days, while bandcamp never ceases to actually amaze me and surprise me by it's goodness.

A cursory search shows that some PRF'ers (besides me) already use it.

oh duh!
I totally forget, you know that new thing where people give out the download cards with the vinyl or cd or whatever?

They do that too.

I think you get like... 200 free?
And after that you have to pay for them.
You have to print them yourselves since their 3rd party partner that did that shut down their api, but it's still a nice system.

Personally, I think it's easier to just give it away, but I've almost completely given up any hope on making money off people buying music these days. I'd rather they just hear it, and hope to hell that they don't devalue it by it being free.

Your mileage may vary.

Bandcamp has long been my favourite music hosting-type service. It does lack the social aspects of MySpace/Facebook/etc. pages; on the other hand, in a lot of ways that's a great thing.

Salut! the Bandcamp.

Maple Stave has been using this for a good while now. It is a great, great, great thing so far as we can tell. Clean, simple, fast, and flexible. Geeks like the fact that there are many formats available in one place. Gets large files off your site. Is just plain awesome.

Someone's tried to change our password before [why? fuck if I know. maybe they want a piece of the sweet $12 we make quarterly] and it sends you an email that lets you know "...someone's been dicking with your account."

Conan, you neglected to mention that you can view your statistics in Defender View. You can then play Defender in your statistics. This is key. Are you trying to sell this thing or not?

NC, no waffles.

The disaster that is MySpace cannot die soon enough.

I agree. Space Defender needs to be mentioned.

The people behind bandcamp really seem to know what they’re doing, and I don’t mean just from a technical point of view, like how they encode your uploads into various audio formats, tagging them with all the metadata, including ISRC numbers. I like how they propagate common sense practices for modern day music distribution. I like how they do not force their ideals on you, leaving all the choices regarding pricing and licensing up to you. I like how they respond quickly to your inquiries and show you that you matter to them. I like how they do not clutter your site or the interface with useless crap. There’s so much to like about bandcamp.

And, of course, they have Space Defender.

I cannot believe that I was remiss in my mention of Defender View.

I was pretty excited to discover Bandcamp through a few friends and used it to post my otherwise out of print debut record a few months ago.

I had no idea about the Defender thing until just now. Wow.

The only experience I've had with Bandcamp is buying the Black Cock record. Painless, easy.

I wish more bands would go digital. From my list of bands I've found from music blogs - Ex Wives, Drunkdriver, Pygmy Shrews, Twin Stumps - all releases on vinyl. If all those bands had a "BUY FROM BANDCAMP" link, I would have.

Yeah, it is hard for bands to make a living but there are still enough people like me who are willing to shell out a little beer/heroin/SSBBW-porn money for musicians. Or a band might even use that money to offset some of their costs. I used to buy these pure nickel strings - $30 a set. I'd change them for every show. In fact, the whole band was about the amazing tone these strings could generate. Give me $30 string money and I'd play in a toilet, and I mean a really seedy one with smears and old fits. Fuck they were great strings... But I digress.

Its cool that bands are embracing vinyl releases. As an object, its superior. But that object costs about as much to ship to Australia as it does to buy and runs the very real risk of being warped, dinged, and pissed on by the postal service. As a band it makes sense to give people as many opportunities to give you money as possible.

I'll give another positive shoutout to Bandcamp!! Have a page, and used it to order the new Solex/Crisitna Martinez/John Spencer thing, totally great. When they do 24 bit, it'll be even better.

Our micro-label has all its records on Bandcamp. It's actually in the perfunctory contract everyone signs in case of ~legal emergency~.

I discovered it when someone on this forum posted Black Cock's Bandcamp, and that is in every way a shameless namedrop.

They are going to start charging modest fees on transactions, VERY modest compared to what itunes charges in August.

I'm totally fine with this, because it'll allow them to keep the doors open and keep providing a great tool.

All time stats are great too.
In the past six months, you guys have used Bandcamp to sell over $1 million USD in music and merch directly to your fans. The pace of those sales is increasing rapidly, and last week we even saw an artist make it to the Billboard charts on the strength of her Bandcamp sales alone. It’s been awesome to witness, and we’re amped to carry right on, full steam ahead, building out new features, honing existing ones, strengthening our infrastructure, and generally making things better and better. Perhaps most importantly though, we want to do so in a way that’s sustainable long-term, and ensures that we’re here supporting musicians far into the future.

So, as long promised over in our FAQ, we’ll soon begin doing a revenue share on Bandcamp sales. Here’s how it will work:

Bandcamp’s share will be 15% of each transaction, dropping to 10% as soon as your all-time sales exceed $5,000 USD.

The revenue share won’t go into effect until early August. Until then, Bandcamp’s share remains zero. We’ve based the percentages on what works for the business and what many of you have already told us feels fair, but there’s still plenty of time for more feedback, so bring it (preferably in the comments below).

The revenue share rate for existing accounts will be based on all your sales to date. That is, we’ll look at your all-time sales and base your rate on that total. This means many of you will start at the 10% rate from day one. Note that we’ve just launched all-time stats, so you can easily see where you stand.

Your rate will be based on sales to your PayPal email address, not your Bandcamp account. In other words, if you’re a label and have five artists all using the same PayPal account, your rate will be calculated by looking at the combined sales of all five of those artists.

The basic service will remain free. Bandcamp only makes money when you make money. We considered building the business around advertising, but…well, OK, we never really considered that. We did consider building it around subscriptions, but under that model, given the option of either developing a feature to increase your sales by 20%, or dinking around with service tiers to try to boost our subscriptions by 20%, we’d have to choose the latter. By building the business on a revenue share, our interests are perfectly aligned with yours: we only succeed when you succeed.

Questions, Answers

How will the revenue share work? We’re still hashing out the exact mechanism, but the money will continue to flow directly from your fans to you. Loads of you have told us how much you like that aspect of the service, so we’re planning to leave it that way. We’ll of course provide an interface for easily viewing all your transactions and the associated share split, and we’ll provide details of how the share will work by the time it goes into effect.

Do these rates include PayPal transaction fees? No, processing fees are separate. Those rates are here, including details of what you can do to minimize them.

How do your rates compare to the alternatives? We aim to give you a clear financial incentive to direct your fans to your Bandcamp-powered site first, so we’ve made our rates far lower than iTunes’, and very competitive with other music distribution sites. We won’t subject you to one of those competitive matrices that’s out of date the moment it’s published, but we certainly encourage you to do some research and compare (but pack your magnifying glass, fine print abounds in the music biz).

I am angry. What should I do? Leave a comment, we’d be happy to consider your feedback. If you are angrier than that, head over to your profile page and click the link that says “permanently delete this account.”

I am happy. What should I do? We’d love to hear from you as well, so please leave your thoughts below.

I desire an inspirational conclusion. What should I do? Read on, because we want to thank you all again for using Bandcamp. We’re honored to have been entrusted with such an important aspect of your career, and we couldn’t be more excited to keep cranking away on Bandcamp for a long time to come!
