I have listened to every single link posted in the 'listen to each others bands' thread, every one. It's what I have on at work every day. I started at the start and have gone all through it and kept up.
The fucked up thing is that I do not hate one band, not one. There's something I like about every one. The PRF scene has a distinct lake of fake asshole horseshit. It's just motherfuckers playing their music that they obviously dig. There's joy in this music, you know? Happiness. Even the most bonk bonk mumble mumble noise rock shit around here, I hear joy in it. Such a huge assortment of sounds, too. All kinds of bands. All kinds of different shit. Quiet shit, loud shit, fast shit, slow shit, dance shit, noise shit. We have it all, and it all makes sense together.
You would think by sheer volume, there'd be one or two asshole bands with some asshole music. There really isn't.
Fuck, PRF, we seriously have the best thing goin' here. Can't wait to be interviewed in 15 years for some documentary about the PRF scene. I wanna be interviewed in 15 years about the PRF scene. I want books filled with photos of our exploits. I want people who we don't know to know all about us. I want stories that are not true to be become myth and legend.
I hear there was a show where The Columbines killed a pig on stage, and the cops came and PEPPER! shot at them with his shotgun he keeps in his guitar case and they ran away and they kept rockin'!

Let's move this forward a few steps, let's take it up a notch or two.

Why don't we all pool together and make this a full on record label?
I envision a situation where interested parties throw in monthly dues. Nothing nuts, a little something each every month into an account. If we have enough people in on it, 20 bucks each or whatever.
Every month or whatever works, bands involved submit some material for consideration.
'This is what we have recorded and wanna release'
Everyone who has paid in listens and decides what we will press that month. We can do a 12 inch a month if we have enough people in on it. Couple exclusive songs from a couple PRF bands every month or few months or whatever. The bands will get a few of them to sell and the rest will be sold online or wherever and all the money made goes back into the pool for the next one. Nobody makes a dime, it all goes back into the machine. The machine keeps churning.

It's, what? A grand to press a 12"? Something like that? Probably less if we work our connections and whatnot.

I think that would be fucking excellent and amazing and fun and the coolest shit ever if eventually there is a library of these 12 inches. Documentation.

Anyone have any thoughts?
Fuck we doing here?

I suggested this to Faiz just a couple weeks ago. I think it's a good idea.

I have heard crazier ideas and less appealing ones.

And with most record labels going the way of the dodo, there's a serious opportunity.
Man, is this socialism in action?
Is the Tea Party right?

In all seriousness, my top 5 favorite bands out of 10 are on here and have amazing stuff that they would release, but they don't have the money for it right now.

So, who knows about prices and whatnot?
If we get like a hundred 12 inches pressed, what would the realistic cost be?

If we get 40 people throwing in 25 bucks a month, shiiiit. We can get this shit done without issue, I would think. Doin' thangs.
I mean, for half of what you spend weekly on coffee or internet porn or whatever your bullshit is, you can be a part of this wonderful thing. Your band can be part of this wonderful thing.

It would be very cool to have these things. With digital bullshit downloads and CD's and nonsense, these beautiful, lasting things should exist. No reason this should not have been already happening a long time ago. This will be easy to do, really. It's not a crazy wild scheme, it's a simple process. Assholes press asshole records every day. Let's make some good ones. Let's do this shit.

I've had this idea for some time.

I'd go a step further and propose a distribution company to go with it for self-released and "friendly" labels. And I have a distribution deal waiting for me -- a good one.

This idea merits further discussion, but we could do this thing.

Fuckin' own this shit.

My idea would be to press a very small number, just for the PRF. I would want to stay away from looking at it as a profit type thing, distribution and whatnot.
I mean, a regular for profit PRF record label would be a great idea as well, with distribution and promotion and all the bells and whistles working for the PRF and it's children, but this idea I am talking about is something different. Smaller. A group gets together and presses a record for themselves every month. All PRF, in house. Similar to the songwriting challenge, except all going in and getting a PRF record pressed instead of all going in and making a PRF album. Document these bands, have something special in hand that's ours.

These are great ideas. I have nothing else, so that's good. You'd have to go over the details, so it doesn't leave room (or a lot of room) for sore feelings and all that whatnot. (You know that'll pop up.)What was that kick starting or whatever page I've been seeing? I think the Karl Rove thing used it, and Crooked Fingers. Seems like a nifty thingy.

The distribution thing is obviously cool. Cool guys, cool. Pretty, pretty cool.

Well, we could get a list of bands or musicians interested. Those bands all agree to throw in each month.
I like the idea of randomly picking two of the bands who are in the pool each month, out of a hat, whatever. We pick two a month and say 'You are up, give us a song'
We take those two songs and put them on a 12 inch. No hard feelings, every band gets their turn at some point.

If we do it by bands, that's nothing for each member. They throw 5 bucks or whatever each in every month and at some point there's one of their songs on beautiful vinyl to hold in their hands.

Great idea. I like the idea of a label featuring a permanent, physical medium of only PRF bands because it has real meaning. It's similar to the regional aspects of Dischord. One fun way to house the label could be to create a wiki similar to this one: www.bandwiki.ca . It features all the local bands and artists from my hometown and is as editable as any regular wiki. Just a thought.

2 things, this almost sounds like a 12" of the month club as much as a label.
Nothing wrong with that at all.

Asking somebody to buy a record is asking them to purchase a collector's item. Totally makes sense.

That said: fulfillment.
Who spends the money to ship out these records and pay for the packaging?
It is something nobody minds at first, but it it thankless, boring and time consuming.
Who does this?
Because I guarantee that the commune like atomsphere will disappear when there are 20 packages that need to go to 5 corners of the world and the Ex are in town or something.

Bandcamp is a free tool that is aces for this and they take nothing now, as far as a metric for that.
They will charge soon, but not much and the service is made for audiophile nerds and easy to use.

I DON'T KNOW SHIT ABOUT SHIT, but... is it a hassle to get pressing plants to deal with batches as small as 100 pieces? I always hear folks talking about 500 or 1000 piece minimums to keep the cost reasonable.

For batches of 100 or so... is this where the "lathe-cut" stuff comes into play?

Shit, who sells these cutting machines (and where does one procure "blanks" to cut)?

THAT might be the thing to do (?!)
My mind, it's a terrible diskette.
