Oh look it's Halloween. I sat around hyper-allergic and dopey on Benadryl all day. A little while ago I watched this movie.

Here's my review.

To my surprise there is a Jean Rollin film that has merits that are neither just anatomical nor mere bizarre novelty. LES FRISSION DES VAMPIRES may have those minor virtues, but it also has great locations, competent composition, and color and lighting that are downright compelling. Wardrobes seem actually thought out to fit the colors of the scenes. Pale purples contrast with deep green moss on the dusk-reflecting blue stone of the totally awesome castle. It also has some of my favorite goofy vampires in the form of two eccentric aristocratic brothers consumed with research and theory who are not particularly malevolent (in a better work they'd have real character potential) and a more tratitional femme vampire who has the very unsupernatural quirk of popping out of odd but mundane hiding places like a clock, curtains, and the chimney ("I wonder where she'll show up next," remarks a seduced initiate). This vampire also impales a person on her breasts (this reminds me of, but does not top the great impaling scene in Ken Russell's amazing LAIR OF THE WHITE WORM). This movie might not be a "good" movie, but it has so much more to offer than most Rollin or general euro-trashy lesbian horror films. The highest praise I can give is that it reminds me of Mario Bava. It even has a repeated quirky shot technique in the 360 degree pans as an analog to Bava's delirious trumpet shots.

*Edit: see if you can catch the Freudian slip that autocorrect didn't. I can bring myself to change it now.

^ Oh, and the soundtrack is an absurdly on-the-nose ripoff of early Pink Floyd (first threeish records). There is a shameless knock off of "Interstellar Overdrive" which scrambles itself just before initiating that song's signature riff. On another track in the third act you can sing along with the chorus of "Set the Controls (For the Heart of the Sun)."

Reissue of The Name Of The Game is Kill (AKA The Female Trap) from VCI Entertainment, a fun little movie from 1968 with Susan Strasberg, Tisha Sterling (she was Legs on Batman) and Jack Lord (!!). Great twist ending, spooky locale, a great Electric Prunes song, this stuff was gold in 1974 if you were up late at night watching TV and 12 years old.

The Woods

It's too early to tell if it's a trees come to life Evil Dead thing (is that a giant splinter being pulled out of a leg?), I'll probably see it, I hope it can live up to the hype.

I realize it's just a trailer, but right out of the gate they do the "haunting version of a pop song" thing that, in 2016, is one of the most fucked-out horror tropes imaginable. I kept waiting for a broken baby doll, little girl with wet hair in her face, or writing on a wall that lOokS liKE tHiS, but thankfully none of that happened.

Skeptical, but I think you're the one who recommended the excellent Lake Mungo here, so I'll probably give this a shot.

Yes. Hell, yes.

You know what's actually scary? The Celtic Frost song "Cherry Orchards".

Bloody Disgusting think that Preacher is going to be the best thing since Soul Train.

I doubt it, and I doubt this will be particularly scary.
