The last surviving member of the Trapp Family Singers, the group whose story inspired The Sound of Music, has died at the age of 99, her family say.
Maria von Trapp died at her home in Vermont on Tuesday, her brother, Johannes von Trapp, told the Associated Press.

and then this,

Heather Menzies-Urich, who starred as Louisa von Trapp in the 1965 film adaptation of The Sound of Music, has died at the age of 68. The Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization confirmed the news in a statement Monday, saying, “Heather was part of ‘the family.’ There is really no other way to describe the members of the cast of the movie of THE SOUND OF MUSIC. And of ‘the kids,’ Heather was a cheerful and positive member of the group, always hoping for the next gathering. We are all lucky to have known her, and she will happily live on in that beautiful movie. We will miss her.”

this was all very confusing for a minute. no, did not look up Heather Menzies playboy.

My younger brother told me today that Rick Hall had passed. Sadly, it looks like it is indeed the case...

My brother also told me a story he hadn't actually filled me in on before.

While the studio is obviously a pretty big deal to music fans everywhere, it has another layer of "Big Deal" for folks who live in or have roots in Alabama. While he and the lady he was involved with at the time were visiting family, they went out to go on the studio tour. During the tour, Rick walked in(seemingly in the middle of a work day). While he didn't say anything to anyone else, he talked to the woman my brother had been involved with. While he normally would have called somebody on that, my brother just let it slide because he had that degree of respect for the guy's life's work.

Anyway, that put a smile on my face.

A colleague and friend died in a car accident late last week. We've worked together for the last 12 years, and he was too young, too bright, and too loved to be gone so soon.

Just heard France Gall has passed away. Damn. Never learned much about her personal life but have been a big fan of her music for a while now, and she was super cute in her heyday.

Jeff Cotton, aka Antennae Jimmy Semens, has died. He is responsible, alongside Zoot Horn Rollo and Rockette Morton, of 50% of my ADN regarding the playing of the guitar or bass. RIP.

RIP, my cool uncle. Thanks for leaving your cassette collection at my grandparents’ house for me to find at 10 years old. Led Zeppelin’s CODA, The Who’s Live at Leeds, British Steel...you inadvertently blew my little mind. Salut!

I always enjoyed The Cranberries, from time to time. Even the Zombie song, and that was a bit... meh, not really their style, a grungie song made because Nirvana. The records were generally quite medicore, but Dolores voice really elevated them to good records. RIP.

This would have passed most people on the forum by, but last week New Zealand drummer from the punk/new wave era Buster Stiggs died at 63. Played in the Suburban Reptiles

phpBB [media]

but most especially was known for this song by the Swingers which 100% of everybody in NZ knows.

phpBB [media]

So then a funny thing happened tonight as I was playing in the covers band as usual. There's a middle aged guy in the audience and he's a musician, and you can always tell because they do things like look at your hands while you play, and come up and squint at your amp, and generally pay attention to what you are doing in ways that the regular folk don't. It's really obvious when you're playing these kinds of bars. In music venues everybody watches you like that but in sports bars it might be only one or two or none.

And we played the above song, not because Buster Stiggs had died but because it's like Sweet Home Alabama to New Zealanders and we would have played it regardless. After the set the guy comes up and he says he was a musician on the New Zealand scene in the 70s and 80s and Buster Stiggs was his friend and he wanted to thank us for playing the song so well. He said we were really good, said *I* was especially really good (ha ha guys), but was disappointed to learn that we're just wasting our talents playing covers in this bumhole town. Yeeeeah those are my words but...

Now those fellas are terrific musicians, some of the best I've played with, but I know they aren't looking for anything more than to get paid $175 for three hours work. But for me it definitely made me feel like I've been stuck in this gig for too long.

Sorry, that story was all about me.

Anyway cheers, Buster Stiggs' buddy. Your friend died and we played his song for you tonight by accident. You made me feel like I should aim higher.
