Seen any good movies lately?

Postby Riff Magnum on Fri Feb 17, 2012 12:38 pm

I know there's a netflix streaming thread and various crap/not crap movie threads, but i can't really find a general discussion on my favorite topic besides music. Point me in the right direction if there is a thread like this already.

Just saw, "Take Shelter" with the crazy ass head of Michael Shannon and the lovely Jessica Chastain. Very good stuff. Creepy and psychological "thriller." Growing up in the midwest i relate to the tornado paranoia and the very unsettling and powerless feeling of watching a storm approach over the prairie.

What the hell, man. The minute I saw the title of your thread I was about to post about the very same movie. You took the fun out of it!

Jokes aside, what a good film. Like a Shyamalan movie, but actually clever and profound. Michael Shannon is just an amazing actor, easily one of the best around at the moment.

If you like watching a brainy Keira Knightly getting voluntarily flogged then "A Dangerous Method" is for you.

I thought Fassbinder was really good in this. Movie was good. Not Cronenbergs best, but
it's up there.

I definitely enjoyed it.

"We Need to Talk About Kevin" is also a fabulous film I have seen recently. No flogging though.

Yeah, yeah, it's getting a lot of award season buzz but I really liked The Descendants.

People like to hate on it cuz of Clooney i guess. I thought it was really good, although i'd rather see the Artist or Tree of Life (fat chance) win Best Picture. Can't believe "Drive" wasn't nominated.

Drive was nominated for sound editing, and I agree, but the Oscars are not really for best crafted/artistic film but something else.

I liked The Descendants as well, Clooney was good in it, so was the older daughter. Hanalei was good.

I liked The Artist but thought it was too long by about 20 minites. The acting was fantastic.

I just watched Everything Must Go, with Will Ferrell. Based off the Raymond Carver short story Why Don't You Dance?, which I never read. I would describe it as a "good" movie. Not great per se, but good. A lot of sadness though.

You have to check out Le Havre by Aki Kaurismäki. Probably my favorite "comedy" of the past year.

Other favorites of 2011 that I've seen:

The Artist ( I started a C/NC but no one responded)
Drive
Warrior
Melancholia
The Tree of Life
Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris
Scorsese' Hugo

On my list to still see

A Dangerous Method
Shame
Carnage
The Descendants
My Week with Marilyn
Moneyball
The Guard
Young Adult
A Separation
We Need to Talk about Kevin
Martha Marcy May Marlene
The Mill and the Cross
Attack the Block
Take Shelter

I watched Le Quattro Volte last night.

It's great, and I enjoyed it.

Got a few promising titles coming in the mail: Elem Klimov's Farewell, Lee-Chang Dong's Poetry, and Marked Woman starring Bette Davis and Humphrey Bogart.

We saw Chronicle on a whim the other day. Nothing amazing, but a pretty fun movie where the kid acting isn't insanely annoying. I want telekinesis now.
