I laughed. :) The movie got a slew of awards around these parts, was very popular among audiences and got huge praise from critics. I hope it does interest someone here on the forum. Ciao!

That's 100% exactly what we said after we came out of the theater. Good movie, but holy shit. Stressful.

i defy any film to arouse more nervous tension than torn curtain!

aww and julie andrews's sweet pathetic unconditional love when paul newman could not be any more like " fuck off, id rather live in nazi germany than marry you" and she just tags along for all the danger haha but it's dangerously close to being my favorite hitchcock film, but i always say that everytime ive seen it or rope or shadow of a doubt or the trouble with harry.

Well written, well directed, brilliantly acted.

But makes The Road look like a Disney musical. I really liked it, but it was unrelentingly grim.

Great. While I was on the fence, I guess I have to see it now.

Thanks for the heads up, wasn't sure if it was out yet.

Had occasion to watch it just now, and man, that was a tough one and rather complex in some ways. From the trailer I assumed it might be one of those movies, like In a Lonely Place, in which the viewer is lead to believe something more ominous is afoot than is really the case, but nope, Harmonium was not that type of movie. Didn't quite make me cry but I honestly felt distressed past a certain point. Pretty well written, shot, and directed, though there were a few moments as the film wore on that were a bit flatter than probably intended. It's garnered a 6.9 on IMDb and that seems about right to me. Definitely worth seeing.

I was kinda expecting something a bit more oblique (this is probably a bias on my part, a good deal of the more modern dramas I've seen are sort of like this) than something like In a Lonely Place. And yeah, it was pretty good how, early on in the movie, we hear of and are shown what is wrong and how it could go wrong in a lot of different ways, certain revelations are made known, and yet the way it plays out is still unexpected and devastating.

I didn't think anything felt flat, but it certainly was kind of draining to watch it all unfold, especially in the final act of the film. The dreamlike sequences were beautiful though and that last shot of Tadanobu Asano's character is gonna be etched in my mind for awhile.

But yeah, definitely one of the best dramas I've seen from last year.

^how can you guys watch that stuff? lesson learned, don't let society living dull your senses, keep your instincts about you and when you feel something in your gut don't be overtrusting and fucking do something about it. all of that disgusting "how far can we twist this story" is like, are you kidding me, do you not read the news and see this happens all the time? not exact-detail specific, but for christ sakes being an alive being is having an instinct for danger, by the time one of these parents took initiative for their kid it was in the dumbest ending way possible when you're supposed to be worried about all that stuff the minute those beans got put in that oven. feels like watching every tragedy that could've been avoided unfold and is infuriating in the same way you yell at the bimbo in a horror movie not to open the closet door.

no. when you need a roller coaster ride of a movie, throw on torn curtain or something. let's see if i can get this link to work part ii...

Saw Torn Curtain about twenty years ago, in 35mm at the Times Cinema. Paul Newman is cool, but Hitchcock is one of the most overrated filmmakers I can think of. Will begrudgingly admit that I mostly enjoyed Rear Window (probably his best, and a movie I enjoyed a lot as a little kid) the last time I caught it. But man... on the whole Hitchcock sure was corny and misanthropic, a noxious combination that really wears thin the more films of his one sees. His whole concept was baldly "film as manipulation," and little else. So in addition to being a less than stellar "artist," he was a shallow theorist. He was a decent craftsmen who used good film stock, but the greats of his day like Nicholas Ray, the Archers, Welles, etc. are WAY WAY cooler and have influenced far better cinema. It's really hard for me to overstate how much I think Hitchcock and the bottom-shelf psychology he espoused have been a negative influence on cinema.

Not lately. I saw this when I was way too young, I could not remember what it was called, would tell people how the movie went, even asked the PRF ages ago and some wag said "Bullshit, you're making it up" or something like that, many years later I've figured it out!!!

Ok, next mystery. Has anyone ever seen the movie Jigsaw (1980) directed by Robina Rose?
Maybe someone here from the UK? It's about autism and pretty it's wild. Messed my brain up. I searched Jigsaw and all I get on the interwebs is promo for the new bullshit SAW movie.

Saw that one on VHS many moons ago. Something of a precursor to Weekend at Bernie's. Of films shot in Autumn The Trouble with Harry does a better job than most at capturing what it feels like to behold the peak colors of leaves turning, just before all of the foliage assumes a dull brown. Coupled with the film stock they used and the crisp exposures, this does make for a good looking film, I'll give you that. :D

Starting to enjoy some of the more recent horrors getting pumped out. The VVitch and It Follows were both tense, terrifying and brilliant.
