What fucking horseshit.

You should feel ashamed for typing that.

That's why I copied and pasted it.

Deepa Mehta is generally solid. The Elements trilogy of Earth, Fire, Water are good - and disturbing.

No kidding. Leni Riefenstahl was unquestionably greater and more influential than two of the three people on that list.

(Then again, she was also more fascist than three of the three people.)

A couple of good films I forgot to mention earlier...

Go! Go! Go! by Marie Mencken:

Fake Fruit Factory by Chick Strand:

Both of these are available as part of the Treasures IV: American Avant-Garde Film, 1947-1986 2-DVD set that came out a few years back.

To be honest, I don't like every single movie that was included in this release and was disappointed over certain films that weren't included (like Serene Velocity or something by Bruce Connor, for instance), but nonetheless it is pretty much essential as the transfers are top-notch and its not terribly often that movie like these are made available for home viewing.

Just noticed there are some videos of Mary Ellen Bute films on Youtube...

Might seem kind of "tame" by today's standards but they were ahead of their time no doubt.

I can't think of a single movie I've really cared about directed by a woman. As in music, so in film.

If that's the case you probably don't like women.

I don't like women, but that shouldn't disqualify them from making a movie for me.

Lynne Ramsay did Ratcatcher and Morvern Callar. Those are both supergreat! I still don't know how her Kevin movie is, but hey, John C. Reilly.

And if you're going to see one Claire Denis movie, make it Beau Travail. That one rocks! And as a bonus you'll learn what Eritrea looks like! Or was it Djibouti?

Just seconding some other comments, and making sure that someone has said Morvern Callar in type. It is very worth watching.

She directed several and thanks to a good friend I've since seen India Song from 1975, an excellent study in Marienbad-like languid opulence.
