Try and identify "Unknown" tracks on YouTube

Postby Arson Smith on Thu Jul 18, 2013 8:46 pm

GO!

phpBB [media]

(song starts about 4 seconds in... somebody must have a clue on this one at least...? I'm having a terrible time making out *any* lyrics, so my Google-fu is useless...)

phpBB [media]

(even with clear lyrics, no hits on the Googler... sounds like it could have been a small regional "hit", somewheres...)

phpBB [media]

(probably the least likely to be identified of the three... but what the hell...)

If only Shazam had invented Shazam so people could Shazam these songs with Shazam.

Boy Genius, the Shazams and the Googles are coming up emptys - that's why these have folks stumped (at the moment) - we have a varied (at least I think sometimes) cross-section of folks here, so I thought I'd toss some out, for funsies... again, of the three, I want to think one of our UK pals might have an idear on that first one, but maybe not...

Seems like every song ever is in Shazam. Maybe these are demo tapes from no-name bands that only 20 people on earth ever heard. I suppose in that case it will be interesting to see if anyone recognizes them. Alas none of these songs is "jack in the box" by terrible 1992ish basement demo band Jared Syn, so I am of no use.

First one might be Opal, but don't recognize the track. Hear "imaginary lines" and "run out of this prison."

No idea on the others.

Doesn't sound like Opal to me. I'd put it at some mid 80's Souxie & The Banshees ripoff.

I'll say Shakespeares Sister on that one.

If the "eighties" thing is even remotely close, it's not Shakespear's Sister. The first record came out in eighty nine and sounds nothing like that.

I think the folks in the You Tube comments may be on the right track. That song sounds quite a bit like a few of the Gene Loves Jezebel singles.

Yeah, I didn't really think it was Shakespeares Sister. I just like to bring them up at every opportunity.

That makes two of us. Interesting rumor: 20th anniversary expanded version of Hormonally Yours later this year.

I'm getting a distinctly Cherry-Red-Records-circa-1987 vibe off the first one.
Look at that! A perfectly square bit of black dirt on the window!

I was messing around the other night and started playing this melody. I'm almost certain it comes from somewhere else. Probably a rock song or something folky.
Any ideas?

I can't believe I didn't see this years ago. Would have been able to name that tune in only a few notes.

Various Dustdevils were friends of mine during my early years in NYC. Gutterlight, the album from which the song hails, is most likely their best start-to-finish album, although the ...Is Big Leggy EP and Struggling, Electric, and Chemical LP are both pretty mighty, too.

But "Oyster Catcher" was recorded when they were still based in Leeds, England, before they moved back to the USA.

Totally great, underrated band, tarred in their day by way too many, only partially deserved Sonic Youth comparisons.

Siri couldn't identify it. This dorky anime clip is often edited with something else. I must know the name of this tasteless earworm.
