PRF Distro!

Postby jonsolomon on Tue Jun 24, 2014 10:54 pm

Spent eight hours in the car today. Lots of time to think. Lots of ideas.

Here's one:

When I am not in a car from Chicago to Pittsburgh I am often shipping records. When I'm not shipping records, I spend a considerably smaller (but no less significant) percentage of time answering messages from people outside my country who are (rightfully) frustrated about the cost of shipping a single record to their doorstep.

What if I were to start stocking 5-10 copies of as many "PRF and related" bands' records as you sent me? I'd act as a distributor and then instead of ordering from a ton of different bands/labels (which, if you ordered from bands/labels directly instead would be a welcome occurrence existing concurrent with this idea) you could get these records in one tidy location.

Would pay when I was out of each title, then order more.

You set the distributor price, I mark up as distributors do.

Potentially beneficial to bands and those ordering records here as well as overseas.

Would need cover art and record/band text to set up each product in my system, but should be easy to add/subtract to as need be.

Thoughts? Blessings? Questions?

Jon

I think that's a swell idea. Also, there could be regional 'hubs' to save even more shipping costs- for example, one person would be the chicago point guy and since there are a ton of prf folks in chicago, that person will do a monthly shipment to you. everyone else will drop their stuff off with that guy beforehand for the big shipment. And it could go the other way too. Shipments go out the first of every month and everyone picks up all their records at once.

Hey,

Just my $0.02.

Take Jon up on that, whoever reads this.

Jon booked my old band Silkworm long ago, put out a single of ours in 1996, put out the first two Bottomless Pit albums on CD, and put out the entire release of the most recent B Pit album.

We did the records without even talking about money in advance, much less doing a contract.

Not that you'll have to do that...but I don't trust people all that easily. He's one of like four people in the world I would care to have put out one of my records.

Anyway.

Good idea, Jon!

Pretty sure both my bands would send you some, Jon.

Like a phoenix, non-pussy indie rock will rise again and it will have a PRF Tattoo on it's belly.

Thank you, all.

The "Chicago hub" idea for drop-shipping is one I had not considered but would be excellent. Thank you, person I just learned the actual name of.

Ideally I'd like to get a mix of like-minded labels who have supported PRF-centric bands and self-released stuff under the same roof. Will work up a list of known entities once I get back to New Jersey (tomorrow!) and am recovered from this incredible BBQ (Monday?).

Feel free to email me (jon at comedyminusone dot com) as that's easier for me to handle than a PM.

Goodnight.

This is a fantastic idea. It's something that my friends and I have talked about in the past, since we live oceans away from anywhere. Shipping records one by one from where we live seems silly - the postage from here to any major population centre costs more than the record itself.

If you have somebody in the US and somebody in Europe with a stack of your records, then suddenly the whole mail-order thing becomes way more economical for everyone.

There is no question that bands ought to take Jon up on his offer. The only question is whether Jon will name this new venture A Star Is Bought, or perhaps Phone Calls from Americans.

Also, this is a really great idea. As someone who occasionally orders records from the US, the shipping is mad costly and I feel like a heel getting someone to schlep down to the post office just to send one record off. Even if this doesn't make much financial difference, it being easier to ship records out is excellent.

This is fantastic. I've used http://www.bluecollardistro.com/ in the past, and while they are great - I think the PRF/Curated aspect of this makes it top notch. You sir, are a saint. And like Tim said, I'd totally be fine sending copies for free and only getting paid on what sold. Being housed next to other like minded bands is probably more likely to get someone to buy our records. I just want people to hear them. None of us are in it for the money, obviously.
