EA Rotisserie Baseball 2015

Postby samizdat on Wed Jan 28, 2015 11:14 pm

It's a little early, but interest has already been expressed. I will commish the league unless someone else already had something in mind. I've been the commissioner of an AL-only 7X7 league for going on fifteen years, so it's something I enjoy.

I enjoy all formats but head-to-head, so I'm open to most anything. It would be nice to have some consensus about our format, so if you're interested in playing, drop a note here, and also maybe give me some guidance on the following options:

* draft OR auction
* mixed league, al-only, nl-only
* standard 5X5, OR would you like it if we traded out a couple of the standard categories (like Avg and Wins) for a couple of other ones (like OBP or OPS and Quality Starts)
* daily lineup changes OR weekly lineups
* you guys wanna try a keeper format and see if we can keep this going OR re-draft
* money league (if so, how much?) OR play for free

I've been running leagues on Fantrax for going on five years now. It's a really great service, and we can host our league there for free. I've never seen the site go down other than for scheduled maintenance, and I can only remember a few players not being in their system (and they were international signees or very young minor leaguers). They have a ton of options and I'm very comfortable setting up leagues there. Their customer service reps are also very responsive. They also have a smartphone app. So what I'm getting at is that I'd like to host the league with Fantrax.

Who's interested? What kind of league do you want it to be?

I'm in.

I've had good luck with OPS and WHIP. Quality starts work well, too.

I like daily more than weekly.

Keepers, like $20 buy-in?

As long as the rules are clear and the buy in is no more than $20, I'd like to be in. I've never participated in anything more than a casual Yahoo league, but this would be a hell of a way to start for me. I am really easygoing when it comes to drafting, auto or non, so I don't have a vote there.

I'm agreeing with all three stats, and I have heard some people do away with the win stat entirely, making way for the quality start in its place. But that's probably what you were talking about.

Rules will be transparent and easily accessible.

In terms of what I'm thinking about for stats, prior to feedback in this thread of course:

Offense
Runs, HR, RBI, SB, OPS

Pitching
QS, Ks, Svs, ERA, WHIP

Something like that. More than willing to add to these, or to replace them with other stats. If you all like the idea of placing some value on middle relievers, we could even replace Saves with Saves+Holds. Or not.

Why not do two leagues?
We have enough baseball nerds to pull this off.
Maybe even figure out a way for the winning H2H team to face the winning ROTO team.

Totally okay with these stats and if we wind up with fewer than 14 teams, Sv+H is cool too. I've been trying to get my 14-team mixed roto keeper league to switch from W to QS for years, but they're a bunch of lazy fuckers who resist change. The vagaries of W as a category have helped cost me two championships already.

I'm not a big fan of H2H, but I'll defer to the majority on that one. I've been in both kinds of leagues.

I also prefer auction drafts, but I know those can be much harder to pull off online. A straight draft can still be fun online, especially if we set up a way to communicate with each other beyond text chat.

As for positions, I prefer straight positions rather than doubling up on MI plus 2B and SS, etc. Two catchers make sense however. But again, that's up to the majority. I just want the season to start!

My preference as well. Also mixed league, QS to W, and OPS to AVG.

^ Sounds good to me.

I won't vote on the type of draft or league we have, though I have only played H2H as of yet. I am confident I could figure out and have fun with the other options available.

Roto is simpler to manage in the short-term and I think it more accurately reflects the wisdom of your draft choices, but it's more complicated strategically in the long run. Also requires the one thing I have little of - patience.

As much as I'm not a fan of Head-to-Head, I would be willing to bite the bullet and go with that format if that's what the majority wants (because my primary interest is just to get to know some new solid people). I will say that my AL-only is a simple roto league, but all of my owners play through the entire season because I've created a system of incentives and disincentives to ensure they remain active even when they've fallen out of contention. Of course, it's easier to get that level of engagement when we're all friends from way back and we all get together for the auction and a couple of times during the season to have a good time. Plus it's a keeper league with a minor league system, so there's a lot of natural incentive to build your franchise for the next year.

More compelling to me is if this can garner enough interest to run two different formats, as FM Awesome Komodo suggested. I'm more than willing to put together two different leagues if people are down for that.

I'lll just leave this here for a while, and see just how many people are down to play. Then I'll add it all up and see what we have.

We have plenty of time to get it all together.

I've been playing fantasy baseball for about 15 years (!), but I've never done anything but head-to-head, so roto would be a lot of fun to try out.

With that said, I'd be up for a second H2H league, too -- if it's too much work to run two leagues I'd volunteer to commish one.

2 leagues is a good idea if there are enough participants. Count me in for the H2H format. I assume at least 12 participants for each league is the goal?

I'm in. No preference for H2H/Rotisserie or the stats;

I try to play in one league a year and the last few years have been duds after May. I suspect the PRF will stick with it for a full season better than my usual experience where it's 2-3 diehards and a bunch of people they sucker into playing.
