Best show lineup you have seen

Postby kerble on Tue Oct 17, 2017 2:10 pm

Ahoy!

I was breaking glass with rocks and burning things in the storm with FM black taj this weekend, and he posited this question that I haven't been able to answer yet. What's the best show lineup you've ever seen? Top to tail, all the bands were incredible, maybe you were even surprised by a band you hadn't seen yet.

Obviously, the more bands on a bill, the harder it gets, but I couldn't even think of a two-band bill that fit the description. A lot of three-band bills were close, but usually there's one dud. I think the closest may have been Brainiac/Delta 72/U.S. Maple, but I just liked D72 ok. When it was Sonic Youth and the Ex, the Ex was mind-destroying, but SY was just ok, even though I've seen them play several righteous shows. Still trying to figure this one out.

Love to hear what you remember.

Also, I went through the search, looked at almost 400 thread titles with "show" in it and all the ones with "lineup" in it. If we've done this before, I'm unaware. Feel free to me me.

hep!

Pine Tar .406: Tar, Shellac, MX-80, Six Finger Satellite
Tar, Shonen Knife, Honcho Overload
Richard Davies, Flaming Lips
Silkworm, Engine Kid, Flaming Lips

Seems like old Flaming Lips and Tar are a constant theme in my best show lineups. If I could only remember all of those Cows shows...

Favorite show ever would have to be Afghan Whigs at the Howlin' Wolf in New Orleans on Thanksgiving night 1997. I don't remember if there was an opener, but they played for nearly 4 hours.

New Year's Eve 1999, San Francisco @ The Galleria
Mr. Bungle, Nomeansno, The Melvins, Fantomas, and The Kids of Widney High

I don't know if old man me could tolerate 2 Mike Patton bands in one night, much less one, but it was awesome as not old man me.

Shudder to Think / Sunny Day Real Estate / Brainiac, Kutska's Hall, Green Bay WI, December 1994

Of Montreal / Janelle Monae, Pabst Theater, Milwaukee WI, October 2010

If I had a photographic memory (or heck, if I kept the journal of every concert I'd attended or played, which I did for at least 10 years), I'm sure I could name all of the most special shows where I knew some of the bands or had a hand in setting up the show or played it. I can recall a handful of times feeling that elation at the end of of night of "wow, every moment of this was perfection."

There's gotta be a Jesus Lizard/ Six Finger Satellite show w a third leg that could touch the above show.

^ the above show in Chicago was with Skeleton Key

I'm having a hard time coming up with really great 3-band bills I've seen:
Fugazi, Shellac, The Ex - 6/23/01
Dinosaur jr/My Bloody Valentine/Babes in Toyland - 2/11/92
Screaming Trees/Poster Children/Pond - 4/6/93

Some 2-band contenders:
Firehose/Uncle Tupelo - 10/31/89
Sonic Youth/Jesus Lizard - 11/9/90
Jesus Lizard/Chavez - 12/3/96

While I can't even recall who the other bands on the bills were(exception: Shiner at Empty Bottle), any Those Bastard Souls show I went to. Joan is an all time champ.

Sparklehorse opening a Son Volt show at Park West.

While I went in a fan of Vivadixiesubmarinetransmissionplot, I had my doubts about if any of that record would translate to a live band show. I was so wrong.

Also, Varnaline opening for Sparklehorse on the Sweet Life tour at Double Door. Eric Heywood was playing pedal steel in Varnaline(and maybe Sparklehorse).

Amazing show.

Richard Buckner/Calexico... Schubas

Seems like this might have been a record release for the album Devotion & Doubt. Calexico opened, and then were a part of Richard Buckner's set along with Max Johnston(Uncle Tupelo/Wilco).

That still holds up as one of the best shows I have ever seen.

The staff weren't giving me the things I needed to do my job effectively and give the kids their money's worth...it wasn't too hard considering the concert was only $5

Great thread.

Silkworm, Wheat, and the Glands at 7th St. Entry.

Alejandro Escovedo and Robbie Fulks at my damn college about ten years ago.

Thalia Zedek and Chris Brokaw, as well as this Spanish post rock band whose name escapes me now. Maybe Manta Ray?

Slayer, Megadeth, Anthrax was a near perfect example of that sort of a thing, marred only by bullshit opening act Alice In Chains.

Radio Birdman, Mudhoney, The Dirtbombs, and Easy Action, Detroit, Fall 2006. Four bands I would happily pay to see headline all on one bill, and all of them were on point (especially Birdman, who were mind-blowingly good).

(Oh, and I don't know if festivals count, but at the 1998 Guinness Fleadg in Chicago, I got to see Richard Thompson, John Lee Hooker, and X back to back in the same tent, all of whom did their thing very well indeed.Los Lobos were also really good that day. Shane MacGowan was embarrassing.)

Jesus Lizard/Seam/GvsB in Phoenix, 1993
Jesus Lizard/JSBX at the Sun Club in Tempe, 1992
JSBX/Doo Rag at Club Congress, Tucson 1996?
Dog Faced Hermans/Trenchmouth in SF 1994
Tar/Jawbox at DPC Tucson in 1993
Giant Sand/Amor Belhom at Cafe Aroma, Tucson 1997
Mountain Goats/Alastair Galbraith, record store show, Tucson 1996
The Ex/Aislers Set in Houston, 2003
Calexico/Neko Case in Tempe, 2001
Eugene Chadbourne/Bob Log, Tucson 1997?

There are dozens more, but those were the ones that immediately came to mind.
