PRFBBQ 2018 Chicago

Postby PEPPER! on Sat Oct 28, 2017 9:09 pm

Julia and I will be curating the Chicago PRFBBQ on the evening of Friday, June 22, 2018.

the rest of the event is completely up in the air so if people want to step up and make it happen this is a good time. we would like to help, as would many of the people who have made this thing happen nine times already.

a lot of you are aware that Jonah is not interested in doing it again. there's no drama or hard feelings - he's just not into it. as many of you know he was always pretty hands-off with stuff like dealing with the venue, sound gear, food, donations, and so on. he dealt with bands, did the schedule, got people fired up, and had a vision for the whole event. the last aspect in particular is where his absence will really leave a void.

I've talked with a bunch of people about the BBQ recently and the "vision" is all over the map - some people want to get as many big-name bands as possible, some people want to have mostly “classic” PRF bands, some people want to bar those bands from playing in favor of new blood, some want a huge public event at a bar/venue, some people want it to be private . . . it’s all over the place. the conversation is worth having.

I'll start with my $.02 -

- having different people curate lineups for different nights/days will be more interesting than having one person decide everything

- Saturday & Sunday will be more fun if it's a party and not a bar/venue

I have no say in this but agree with both points

Thoughts from someone who lives nowhere near Chicago:

Thursday night BBQ launch party at a "Classic" PRF BBQ venue.

Saturday/ Sunday: Preferably somewhere outdoors. We do a presale, use it to rent some tents, porta-pottys, maybe a picnic table or two or some other seating. Full on grilling. Beer is keg only and we sell reusable cups to reduce waste.

Bands: Have the majority of the lineup be "classic" PRF bands but still include a small handful of new blood because that is part of what these events are about. Maybe a reunion or three of old defunct PRF bands that we'd all like to see.

As for "Big Name Bands", there is one important PRF band that has yet to play a BBQ. I'd say this is the time.

Willing to come down early to help out in some way.

Well, you have just provided me with what I was hoping to establish today. We're going to be moving out there next summer. Hadn't established a date.

Classic PRF bands. SHELLAC, ARCWELDER, PKIDS. As the only big name bands. And PRF new blood.

If we are settled and both working. I'm going to have a job at Goose Island Clyburn most likely. Leah's situation is up in the air. I will be part of the cooking team. Let's stay in touch via PM.

THANKS

Can't say I have much to contribute except that I AM READY TO DO THIS ALL OVER WITH YOU AGAIN YOU CRAZY BEAUTIFUL MOTHERFUCKERS. Also that I'm planning on making my big Midwest move in 2018 if all my cards play out right, though it might not be months after June.

Anyway though, if the Friday is set, can we reasonably say we're looking at June 20-24, 2018 as the dates? Just so people can get their schedules and plane tickets in check.

Not sure if Illuminated is a possibility, but that was a rad outdoor space. I'd be happy to bring my PA for it, just LMK.

Illuminated would be an awesome non venue scene.

So great!

Suggestions: one day with no dude bands. None.

Outdoors is the best. So happy it is being considered.

One "power run" of Canadian bands. Like five in a row.

I’m taking an extreme half ass approach at finding a space. I’m all about finding a non traditional venue for this. Like, if we could find a artist studio space or some shit that’d rule. Once anyone finds a space, I’m sure the puzzle will practically assemble itself. If anyone has any ideas PM me and I’ll happily contact whomever. We are a smart and ambitious group. We can and will pull this off.

I would really, really like to be there. I think that weekend should fit comfortably around work schedule/ academic year, so it's a real possibility.

These all sound like fantastic suggestions.

However, if Shellac were to play, wouldn't that create all sorts of pressure on the venue and the support staff? They are so much bigger than this little PRF thing that we have. Just worried about it getting too big and out of control.

Now that I am employed again, I would like to come back to Chicago and do another one of these.

Illuminated is good, but for the touring bands it's a real bummer to not be able to sell merch there (and for the people who want to buy all the merch).

Also, there's generally one downpour during every BBQ, so I'm always meh on more than one night being outside.

yeah I'm hesitant to attempt 3 days there as well. I don't know if the neighborhood will put up with it, and as you mention money can't change hands on the premises. also guarding the PA 2 nights in a row in the middle of downtown, fuck that

yeah that would be something to address. either a fake name or not listing them should be OK.

i agree that Shellac should play and if they don't instead of having a BBQ, we should hang Steve because it's not fair that they did not play because it is very difficult to see Shellac because they don't play all over the continent and stuff.

I would like to curate the day of no bands.
