1985: Year In Music

Postby strangeone on Wed Jan 24, 2018 2:59 pm

Been noticing in my collection for a long time now, seems like of all the years in the 80's, 1985 was the best. Noise rock started gaining a big foothold, post-punk was just starting to wane a bit, synth-pop was at it's peak. Industrial was becoming electro-industrial (for better or worse), and punk was still punk for the most part (eh). I was 25 at the time with a great job, lots of dough to spend on music and boy did I. My favorite music shop at the time was Wax Trax!, of course because they were getting stuff you just couldn't get anywhere else. Lots of seminal albums and EP's came out in 1985. Here's the short list:

The Jesus And Mary Chain - Psychocandy
The Smiths - Meat Is Murder
Dead Milkmen - Big Lizard In My Backyard
Sonic Youth - Bad Moon Rising
The Fall - This Nation's Saving Grace
New Order - Low-Life
Meat Puppets - Up On The Sun
Kate Bush - Hounds Of Love
Killing Joke - Night Time
The Sisters Of Mercy - First And Last And Always
The Cure - The Head On The Door
Tom Waits - Rain Dogs
The Cult - Love
Black Flag - In My Head
Propaganda - A Secret Wish
Big Audio Dynamite - This Is Big Audio Dynamite
Husker Du - Flip Your Wig
Tears For Fears - Songs From The Big Chair
Scraping Foetus Off The Wheel - Nail
Red Lorry Yellow Lorry - Talk About The Weather
Killdozer - Snakeboy
Volcano Suns - The Bright Orange Years
Squirrel Bait - EP
The Wolfgang Press - The Legendary Wolfgang Press And Other Tall Stories
Coil - Tainted Love
Skinny Puppy - Bites
Revolting Cocks - No Devotion
Ministry - Everyday Is Halloween/All Day
Clan Of Xymox - Clan Of Xymox
Dead Can Dance - Spleen And Ideal
Naked Raygun - All Rise
Big Black - Racer X
Quando Quango - Pigs + Battleships
Gene Loves Jezebel - Immigrant
Love And Rockets - Seventh Dream Of Teenage Heaven
Front 242 - Politics Of Pressure
Controlled Bleeding - Knees And Bones
Minimal Compact - Raging Souls
Cabaret Voltaire - The Covenant, The Sword, And The Arm Of The Lord
Whitehouse - Great White Death
Einsturzende Neubauten - Halber Mensch

Pretty good fucking list, I'd say -

Additions, anyone ?

1985 was just about perfect. That summer between 7th and 8th grade I bought Black Flag's The First Four Years on cassette and it spiraled me down the good music rabbit hole. I still listen to a lot of what I liked then.

I also got my first girlfriend in 1985!

The real catalyst was "The Bishop of Battle" from this shitty movie I saw on HBO:

We would have hung back then. My 1985 records WAY overlap this list.
Russell Emerson Hall. Throat torturer. Guitar abuser.
Current: Twelves and Bell & Circuit.
Ex: Tyranny Is Tyranny and United Sons of Toil.

The Super Bowl Shuffle ! - How could I forget that one ? Still got the VHS video, transferred to DVD along with the video of the game. The best defensive team the NFL has ever seen, still to this day. No professional sports team has released a song that was an American hit on the scale of The Super Bowl Shuffle. And that loss to Miami was a fluke.

I got arrested during the celebration on Division street. Fuckin' asshole Chicago cops. I was one of the first to get out on an I-bond, and was promptly interviewed by WBBM Radio - they put me on the air, my 15 seconds of fame. I know this because 2 or 3 of my buddies from work heard it.

Seconded on the awesomeness of this year in music.

Ironically, 1985 also saw the release of the worst radio hit in recorded history:

I am forever grateful to this Superfund site of a song. It drove me away from commercial radio in the summer of 1985 and allowed me to be exposed to much of the good stuff discussed in this thread.

The video I associate with 1985 is this one:
