Oh, 1951(ish) Radio Kings, I do not deserve you.

You are re-wrapped and did not come with a snare, this is what I have to tell myself to even consider the possibility that it's okay for you to be with me.

Tiny kick drum, you sound like a cannon; and tom, you sound like a gun.

I love you so. Even though I play you like a spastic orangutan.

Back when going from the smallest to the largest drum, left to right, just wasn't interesting enough for me. No, I do not play with the snare behind me fyi. Sadly, this is still in NY and I've lived in CA for over two years now. Why must shipping drums safely be expensive and a huge pain the ass?

These drums sound so, so good, folks.

Also, I think Dovey is the only drummer I've seen, in person, break a stick before the first song of their set technically started.

A frankenkit courtesy of ebay.
Newish LM402 Supra.
66' 10 x 28 Ludwig 3 ply mahogany kick.
71' 12 x 15 Ludwig 3 ply maple rack tom (former marching snare).
75' 16 x 18 Ludwig 3 ply maple floor tom.

The tone is really aggressive. I tune them a lot higher than most people normally would, basically just under them choking. Resonant is always tuned higher than the batter.
The kick is quite focused and the toms are very resonant.

At this point I'd say the shells are basically worthless. I have too much fun.

is this kit on Youtube or any records where I could hear it? I'm really fascinated by that kick drum and your tuning method.

I recorded this in my band mate's garage. It's not the most accurate representation of my kit being that the audio is doctored, but it gets the point across. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q375iia-1ks

There is also this video which is from a time where I wasn't as proficient with my tuning, but I still used a similar technique to achieve the same tones that I desire today.

My taste hasn't changed.

I am the biggest drum nerd you will probably ever meet and I gotta say, that kit sounds fanfuckingtastic. What's the batter head on the kick?

Thanks a lot man! Glad you enjoy the sound of my kit.

The skin I've always used is one other than the REMO coated Emperor!

Lately I haven't been using felt strips either. I like my kick drum to be equal, if not louder than my snare. I've read that John Bonham used to line the inside of his kick drum with aluminum foil to increase the projection. I haven't tried this but I've been on the lookout for a comparison. Maybe next time I punch through the skin.

(I do like the large falam slams on the batter, which muffles it slightly)

When I use a 22" kick they were shipped inside the skin's box. They worked very well.
For some reason they don't ship them in the 28". Maybe because they're only considering marching bands. Dicks.
I use the Evans eq patch and it still only takes me about 3 months to pop the skin.

How much do falam slams cost if you order them straight from REMO?

A 2 pack at the drum store costs around $5-6. It's a little silly, but they are much more durable than the ones that are sometimes included with the head. (yeah, they include them with Powerstrokes, but not Emperors? Whatever..)
