Good Stuff: Grouper

Postby Christopher_Dragon on Fri Feb 24, 2006 8:27 pm

I recently was persuaded to buy Way Their Crept and I like this record very much.
I had my doubts about it during the first couple tracks but then it got good.
Real good.
Angus, you played with her on your tour, did you not?
Was she good live?

I saw her play in Nottingham and thought it was really good. Then she stayed over at my house and we had a nice chat, and she was a very polite guest. NOT CRAP at all.

I finally got a copy of the most recent Grouper LP, Dragging A Dead Deer Up A Hill. This fucking thing is just exquisite. So gorgeous and haunting. Heavenly music.

Liz Harris! You played your first club show ever w/my band! You were nervous! We picked you up @ Huffin House and helped you load your stuff down those brutal stairs! I drove us all to the show together!

And now you've all but perfected your art, and are making some of the most beautiful music I've ever heard!

Fuck's sake, man.

Not Crap. Very muscley, meaty fish, but that's not a bad thing; when prepared correctly, Grouper is an imposing, hearty and delicious meal. Very, very filling for fish.

Haven't heard the artist.

She's played here a few times in the last month, and I have not been able to see her. This makes me sad, for her records are quite lovely.

This made me smile, cheers. Smile, and nod my head in agreement, too - I've been listening to 'Dragging a Dead Deer..." daily since about a week, it's a strikingly beautiful record. Plus, I think it is the] best winter music ever, I can't imagine a more fitting soundtrack to walking around after dark and seeing everything covered with a thick layer of snow.

That 'Heavy Weather/I'd Rather Be Sleeping' song is the one that got me when I first heard Grouper. Man, what a beautiful track.

Really Not Crap. She doesn't just hide behind her pedals and the sea of echo but uses all that stuff to serve the songs and she can write some really good songs. I'm guessing a lot of the splits are a waste of time but that's pretty common with most bands/artists.

So, I thought I might as well get around to listening to this 'Dragging A Dead Deer Up A Hill' record after hearing 'Heavy Water/I'd Rather Be Sleeping' on Skins last year, which is quite gorg, and thought that maybe a recording of a young person trapped inside an echo chamber with an acoustic guitar might by just the ticket on a downer day. It's pretty nice, although calling the last track We've All Gone To Sleep after 45 minutes of somnambulant reverberating folk woo is pushing it a bit.

She's certainly talented though, and I'm sure if she wanted she could make a completely incredible record. Hopefully she will.
