On the strength of Arise, Not Crap. But man, what I've heard off of Monolith feels like a falloff, even though I heard it first.

i'd suggest to take another listen to monolith unless your mind is completely made up. i really enjoy that record -- very different from their earlier stuff, as it's definitely their most "metal" record with much apparent influence from venom, sabbath, motorhead. the sound is very different from arise or the spiderleg demos (both of which are great), so there is definitely a different appeal to this album, but i like it a lot.
I composed and produced the album California is Cold by Shahmen. Check out the video we just put out for the song Poison.

Too true. This band was simply astounding live. I feeling of elation like I have never felt while watching a band before. Something to behold.

Man, they really were. I was right in the front for their show at Reggie's. I still remember exactly Rob Miller's voice during "Winter", which was incredible.

I think it's awesome how these guys are sword forgers on the Isle of Skye

Yeah, I saw an interview with Rob Miller where he said they saw Killing Joke early on and that became a primary influence. You hear it a lot in the early EPs (which is great).

Now as for the NEW song I posted above, I think a commenter on YouTube put it best:

"Early Amebix sounded like good Killing Joke, thirty years later they sound like bad Killing Joke"

Sad. I liked every note they ever recorded up until this new song.

An Amebix - Live in '86 bootleg LP is now available to stream or download here:

The band gave permission and the quality is pretty damned good.

First I heard of them, too. I mean, I'd seen the name and t-shirts around but never listened until today. Really digging them. Not crap.

I own Arise and I don't get it. Plenty of comical bits throughout.

Want to be clear: you don't get Amebix because the comedy, because so much metal isn't funny?

Sounds like a South Park Morrissey impersonation, that kind of funny.

Been listening to Monolith a lot lately and it's a solid album. Possibly better than Arise.

Overall, not crap and very anthemic:

They ironed out some of the clumsiness on Monolith, but it's a very weak sounding album, the heavy-metal-jeff guitar tone does the material no favours. Still, this is my favourite song of theirs by a long way:

Think of them as a primitive, pagan prototype of Neurosis and you'll be a little disappointed, but they were a good band with a real driving, grinding force from a scene that usually produced shrill and ineffectual pap.

The crowd for their London reunion show few years back remains - by quite some margin - to be the filthiest group of people I've ever seen. The smell was almost as hallucinatory as the music.

Those two tracks are the exception, IMO. I'm not impressed with them either.
