The films of Adam Sandler

Postby mattw on Fri Jun 23, 2006 11:11 am

This man has been a major disservice to comedy and (as Al Gore would say) humankind. I am awestruck--no, make that enraged--by his popularity and continued success.

MWF: Punch-Drunk Love, which was PT Anderson's worst movie and Sandler's best, and The Wedding Singer.

Crap.

:WF: 2 for Punch Drunk Love and for including his dog in his wedding (don't know where I heard that).

Saw him do standup once and yeah, he could be anybody's bland suburban cousin who does funny voices. He's the guy that repeats catch phrases from movies and TV all the damn time, but he's also on movies and TV all the damn time.

Going to high school in the US in the late 90's was made even worse by the amount of Sandler love that existed. What a terrible "comedian". Not funny, but not not crap. That damn remote control movie only continues the horror.

Of course, PDL doesn't really count, and Paul Thomas Anderson some how managed to get a genuinely affecting performance out of the guy.

Unfortuanately, i love the film Happy Gilmore. I just can't help it. I don't like any of his others though. Does that mean i vote NC WF9? I'm confused. And annoyed at myself for loving one of this shmuck's movies.

Billy Madison and Happy Gilmore both are funny movies that definitely have their moments. Wedding Singer and Waterboy are alright, too. Ever since then, he's been trying to turn into a more 'highbrow', nice guy kind of comedic actor and it's horrible.

Billy Madison and Happy Gilmore: NOT CRAP
Everything since then: CRAP

Also, I work at a movie thatre and the poster for "Click" is this light-up, electric doo-hickey that took hours to put together. This is very CRAP.

Nowhere near as funny as Chris Farley.
Nowhere near as funny as the comedy duo of Chris Farley and David Spade.
Still, he's at least ten times funnier than David Spade.

Movies I can stand seeing for the 10th time in the background. Usually laughable moments throughout. Not usually brilliant... just funny.

Low waffle factor due to Little Nicky being stupid in a "nobody knows I'm watching this but I'm still wincing in emberassment" kind of way.

Billy Madison and Happy Gilmore were great.

He's the actor equivalent of a band that is pretty decent for a small, unknown band and then make it big and get more and more bland with each album.

Adam Sandler is Green Day.

This man is not funny.
Not.
Funny.

Same old schtick, every movie.

The one time he did a serious film, Punch Drunk Love, he was actually pretty great.
But then he went back to the same old bullshit.

More Art Films, please.

On the whole, his ouvre gets a CRAP vote. I agree with almost everybody that Billy Madison and Happy Gilmore are funny movies that I still enjoy. PDL I watched and I just kept thinking, "this is overrated," so I'mma include that performance in the CRAP side of his films. I also enjoy The Wedding Singer.

The Wedding Singer and Happy Gilmore are tolerable but have their irritating moments. Punch-Drunk Love is a removable discontinuity and does not factor into my overall rating of Crap.

Probably because PTA doesn't think his audience is a bunch of fucking morons who will eat up any amount of shit he shovels at them. Sandler does.

Challenge: Name another artist, in any medium, who has as much disdain for those who would consume his art.

So crap it's beyond crap, but not in a "and becomes not crap" way. I only saw some scenes from his film and all of them were literally painful to watch because of the horrendous unfunniness of the stupid and obvious jokes which he tried to shove into audience's collective butt.

He's a nice guy and reportedly genuine and down to earth in real life. I think he gets by on a lot of charm. However, if we're talking about the films themselves.... The early ones worked fine enough on a sorta slacker slapstick charm. Not Crap on that. By the time of the 2000s or so they were just atrociously bad though. I can't imagine he's even trying anymore. Haven't seen any of the last ten or so. I was subjected to ten minutes or so of Grown-Ups and I couldn't believe how low he'd sunk. He's just employing his friends for an easy paycheck at this point.

I really think he's a waste of talent. He has a lot of dramatic flair whenever it's pushed out of him. Punch Drunk Love was great imo, but he was paired with a great director. I loved that odd combo. The idea of an "art-house Sandler film", pulled off as well as PDL, is oddly unique. His naturally neurotic demeanor is played for laughs, but when he channels it into something more "real-life" or mature his dramatic charisma comes out, and his over-the-top explosive anger, usually one of his character tricks for cheap laughs, can be genuinely affecting, even powerful.

Every movie I've seen him in is garbage. He's painfully unfunny and can't swing serious roles.
