Crap.

Maybe not crap when I saw Tony Levin play bass with these goofy Chinese finger trap things on his fingers, but I don't think that qualifies.

King Crimson (Tony Levin) uses it now and again, it works. "Sleepless" on Three of a Perfect Pair has it, I think.

Wait, when I saw the 1976 Down Beat Poll Winners show on PBS, they played Lopsy Lu (I recorded the whole thing off the tv on to a Certron cassette)...When I finally tried out a bass, I learned how to play the song (kind of), it was all slappy and thumby...I'm a hypocrite.

In highschool learning the Seinfield theme was the only way non-musicians thought you were any good at bass. Even as a dumb kid I hated it, maybe because of that. It is crap, but like some crap techniques I’m sure there are exceptions. I’m just not going to listen to a song that’s supposed to be an example of ‘good’ slap bass. I’ll wait to come upon it in the wild.
