Yeah I think we've discussed this phenomena before. I like the way people get kind of pissed off the first couple of times they hear Silkworm. This isn't right, I don't like XYZ etc. Then a few weeks down the line it's all they listen to. It's kind of viral in that sense, which makes me think that one day they will be regarded as a great band on a wider level.

Yes, SKWM really isn't a "Hey, I just got this (or downloaded it) and this is what I think, literally a week in" type of band.

This band needs to unfold a little bit. Get back to me in a year and tell me it's boring.

Then we can have discussion at the grown-up table.

There were whispers about potential progress with regards to getting In The West back off C/Z Records for remastering.

Silkworm has been my "modern" rock favorite since the day I heard them; a rare example of a rock band whose music (at their peak) was closer to hard rock power trio concept of the 1970s than hyper-active garage rock of the 1960s. There were not many around if we exclude Sabbath progeny, at least I have not been aware of them. From Developer to It'll Be Cool Silkworm is unbeatable in my book. Libertine and Firewater are also very strong. Early records are fine enough (there are many tasty kernels) but not essential for me to own or listen to. Nevertheless I miss "Scruffy Tumor" and heart-squeezin’ "Garden City Blues". I missed one and only chance to see them when they were touring SEE in 2003 and visited this dilapidated Austro-Hungarian town. So good, so great. Why do I always look back.

I usually find it's Nerves.m4a or (I Hope U) Don't Survive.m4a that I'm dropping into my iChat file transfer window, and if those go well then Slow Hands.m4a as the clincher.

Yeah, I think about this sometimes too. I usually go with Slave Wages or Developer. Though it really chapps my ass when people respond "oh, this sounds like Pavement."

SKWM do this interesting thing for me, where I go months without listening to them, but then when I do get the urge to listen to them, I'll pretty much listen to nothing but them (and Bottomless Pit) for a couple of days at least. In fact I'm doing it right now.

Have you ever seen the Moneyshot Records seven inch with alternate takes of a couple of songs from Blueblood? It has the whole recording set up from the record detailed out in blueprint form, and folds out and has close ups of Tim, Andy, and Michael's individual gear set ups.

One of my favorite seven inch release due to that awesome artwork. I don't think Tim has any copies, but if you can track down Tim Cook (who also released several other rad SKWM/JRLP releases through Moneyshot) I think he still has copies, or at least did a couple years ago when I harassed him about it.

Another reason to friend TC on Facebook.

Also, I can't wait to have a vinyl copy of Libertine in my hands. Literally cannot wait!

That is such an awesome idea for artwork. Especially considering how fantastic the recording turned out and how cool all of the instruments and amplifiers used by the guys in the band were. I think I read on the SKWM site that this album was recorded in Mr. Dahlquist's house in Seattle. Hopefully I'm remembering that correctly, but even if not that I love thinking that such a great album was recorded within such a close proximity to me. Silly but true.

In terms of my current most played SKWM record it's been Developer season around my home for a couple months now. Might be my second favorite of theirs.
yeah? well, drip, drip, drip, drip, drip, drip.

I believe this is right. Done in his basement to an eight-track.

My ulterior motive for wanting to know is that my band's going to be doing some eight-tracks-in-a-basement recording over the Christmas break here and since Blueblood sounds fantastic I kinda want to use that as a blueprint, in terms of mics and positioning and whatever.

Tim talks a little bit about Blueblood in this interview from around the time Hammer of the Gods came out.

Didn't realize that Tim worked at Shure, too. Is that just the go-to place for indie rockers in Chicago that isn't record stores?

How much of what what Tim, Michael, et al were doing at Shure was technical? Were you guys designing mics, or something unrelated?

I know Michael was a technical writer there. I was really excited when I found out we worked in the same field.

I think Firewater is my favorite as a whole, but Developer has my favorite songs on it, particularly "The City Glows" and "Give Me Some Skin."

Whatever happened with that documentary?
