I'm gonna agree but with a high and wide waffle factor

Yes, they're Steely Dan and Spiro Gyra for a generation of upwardly mobile indie kids. Live they're as dull as their fans.

Still, on record they pull off some nice, wistful hooks that make for great makeout soundtracks.

So yes, they are crap because they're yacht rock for architecture students, but they are not crap because they are listenable.

At least Steely Dan had songs about heroin and prostitutes.
I am a weird recluse only here for sex.

PRF Short Fiction Challenge

The staff weren't giving me the things I needed to do my job effectively and give the kids their money's worth...it wasn't too hard considering the concert was only $5

those early records have some mildy rockin' moments and great drumming, but the rest of their stuff is pretty limp. it doesn't help that sam prekop sounds like he's yawning on key.

crap.

Why's it always got to be about the rock?

Nice poppy hooks and awesome drumming. Not the best band I've ever heard, but certainly NOT CRAP

Poppy hooks, yes!

Sea and Cake make an excellent soundtrack to solo urban biking. I don't feel the need to have every album, but I enjoy them.

They are great musicians and spot on live.

Not crap.

simmo, it doesn't have to rock. It just also has to not suck.

Fucking Boo. I'll dig into all the things that are rotten about this tepid band later.

The Sea And Cake is a band that I'm mostly interested in when hearing them at a friend's, party etc. Overall, I enjoy their bent poppy sounds, but they are also one of those bands that I am fully satisfied with owning the one record I enjoy the most.

That record is Nassau, and it is not crap.
It's like you put everything into a bottle inside itself.

I bass Century Rocket Building & Small Awesome

I drum Light Coma & Bully Pulpit & BooKoos

I could make a pretty damn good album out of songs from the first three albums. I kind of lost track after the third one, but I'm sure I could find a song or two off the other albums to put on the bonus CD.

Not crap, and really great live. I was never a fan of Shrimp Boat or The Cocktails (sorry Mayfair, wherever you are...), but somehow I like this band. I don't even like Sam or Archer's solo albums. Weird that I like The Sea & Cake, but I do.
I played a drum in Tijuana Hercules.

That's not true, at least partly. The first four albums did not sound exactly the same. The Fawn is probably the most unique album of theirs.

Everything after the Fawn sounds like Light FM for indie rockers. There's no balls. Complete disappointemnt. Like, our generation's James Taylor.

So, NC for the first four albums.

i like a few tracks and used to have nassau, the fawn and others but ultimately i found them to be, as someone on the old peng! listerv said, "white pseudo jazz/pop for urban hipsters."

i still have that movie soundtrack that john mcentire did for that horrible last john hughes film. that album contains a beautiful TSAC track and i still listen to that but that is all.

overall i'll say crap.

If I want wistful, I'll watch "The Year My Voice Broke" and eat some ice cream.

The Sea and Cake = dishwater.

sadly, yeah. i don't know what happened. the fawn was a great record. i still listen to it semi-regularly. 'the argument' never fails put me in a better mood. the biz and nassau are also good stuff. last time i saw sea and cake play, i couldn't believe my ears. just sounded... limp, as they say. and prekop kept getting sort of billy corgan'ed out vocally. it was bizarre but none of my friends seemed to hear it (or were unwilling to face the truth). i saw them before that in 2000 and it was awesome, yo. they were indeed spot on. but something happened. something bad happened. is mcintire part of the problem? how could that be??

"Jacking the ball" is a pretty nice song, whatever you say.

good call! i use to imagine they said "jackie the bomb" and continue to sing it that way... cause my name is jackie. and honestly, it does sound that way. no really. check it out.

officially, not crap, waffle 9.9. although, as background music, the last few albums are fine if you are not paying any attention.

I like the Sea and Cake a lot.

You could say "all their records sound the same" about A LOT of bands that get resounding not crap votes on this forum.

The new record is awesome, and doesn't sound anything like their other records.

Not Crap.

The Sea and Cake was the first show I saw when I moved to Bellingham to go to college. That was the fall of 2000.

I have the first record, and remember liking it fine (as well as their live performance). I can't remember the last time I put it on though.

I still vote nc at least for being a pleasant memory of my early show going days.
