Like anything, it can be used for good or evil. The ones of the suck suck, the people who know how to play the drum as an instrument can grab & hold attentions.

Soloing drummers! Don't make cock-rock guitar faces! You're better than that! As a drummer I know it's work, but make it look kinda easy! Minds'll be blown!

Also, no twirling your fucking sticks. That's just silly.

Fuck. Why is it so hard to vote on this one? I hate solos. The drums are the only instrument in which the solo has ever appealed to me, but even then... There's something really dorky about it. But I love the sound of the drums, so much so that it's hard for me not to listen at least a little bit.

I don't know... NC. Waffle factor of 9.

*Edit: I'm going to justify my NC vote, by the fact that you can play a dorky drum solo and still make people dance. That is definitely not crap.

Depends on the song/drummer/length of the solo

I have never been impressed by the jerk-off sessions Bonham did, despite how much I love him as an ensemble player. I once listened to the entire 30 minute drum solo he did on that How The West Was Won live album. I will never do that again. His shorter drum solos are great though, like the one at the end of Rock N Roll

Jack DeJohnette did some fucking amazing solos with Miles' electric band in the early 70's, but even those went on too long.

I actually rather liked Ringo's solo on Abbey Road.

Just like any solo, it is super awesome when super awesome and overindulgent onanism when overindulgent onanism.

Sometimes it is both.

I've seen too many good drum solos to vote CRAP, so NOT CRAP.

Still waiting for a Todd Trainer solo, w/ cowbell. That would rule.

Well, Elvin Jone's solos on any Coltrane record I have ever heard completely out shine the other musicians and speak in a way that I haven't heard since.

Rohan let loose the most unique drum "solo" I have ever heard the last time I saw MY DISCO. There was something very Australian, higher-powerish about it, something tribal (I know, I know) and important...it was completely void of the dirty iPhone-bongo app-dreads and autographs vibe. It was a pleasure to see and hear that live.

Drums in itself are a very important instrument to me even though I can't play them well. It's a difficult instrument to make stand out so whenever I hear a drummer that just steals the show, I give him/her 100x more praise.

All solos for any instrument are usually crap, but drum solos are way less annoying then guitar/bass/vocal/keyboard solos. Jesus.

Not Crap.

There are occasionally cool things, but I like songs, so meh.

That said, I'll take a drum solo over a guitar solo 8 days out of 7, yo.

And bass solos are just the dumbest ever.

Mickey D from Motörhead's drum solo normally appears about 2 songs before the end of a standard set. It lasts just enough time to go to the lavatory, queue at the bar and then return to a convenient spot in the crowd.

Perfect drum solo.

Hughie Flint does a drum solo on John Mayall’s Blues Breakers version of “What’d I Say” – that I regularly play for the laughs. It is so bad. It starts off ok and then it’s almost like he thinks they’ve stopped recording so he starts sound checking all his drums in turn - BOOMBOOM, Tishtish, bombbomb, tinktinktink tink, BOOM, BOOMtish, BOOMtish – this just goes on forever.

My guess is that the rest of the band had left the room or had turned their backs on him and didn’t realize he was still going. When they start up again post drum spazz they all go into Day tripper for a few bars so it makes it sound like they really did just stop playing but Hughie carried on.

Anyway – I recommend that if your day needs cheering up.

In general I like a good solo though.

Also, can we all agree never to mention again that I own the Beano album. Sorry PRF.

Not crap in jazz, but in rock it nearly always sucks.

Pretty much the only rock drum solo that's worth a damn is Kenney Jones' phenomenal drum solo on the Faces' version of "(I Know) I'm Losing You."
Life...life...I know it's got its ups and downs.

In the someday, what's that sound.
