Oddly enough, I believe that we passed over Chrome.

Half Machine Lip Moves/Alien Soundtracks is an excellent album, truly worthy of vaulting its creator into the status of "most important groups in the history of music". At least, in the Classical household. Even the steady downward decline of the later recordings can diminsh none of this album's power to evoke the feeling of "otherness".

I saw "Chrome" (Helios and some dudes) in 1998 (?). I don't remeber anything of that show other then they played "Firebomb", they shorted out the PA in the Entry and I stayed till the very end despite suffering extreme wisdom tooth pain, that made it feel like my brain was pushing my eyeballs out of their sockets.

Also:I was dressed like a member of the Bay City Rollers.

Half Machine Lip Moves and Alien Soundtracks are 2 different albums. I think Touch & Go put them both on one CD? If so, this is a CD that everybody should own.

The original "Chrome Box" is also a fun thing to have around:
http://www.staticwhitesound.com/chrome/ ... hy/Box.htm

There are many terrible "Chrome" albums out there consisting of synth wankery by Damon Edge. Edge unfortunately continued to use the Chrome name after Helios Creed left the band.

Chrome is one of those WAY NOT CRAP bands the majority of whose albums have to be considered CRAP.

Not Crap. Also, I really like the Chrome take on "I Left My Heart In San Francisco" from the Ralph Subterranean Modern lp. It's a throbbing mess. Kick azz.

Not Crap.
I haven't heard all of them, but "Third From The Sun" is great.
Even with the Creed-less Chrome on the other "side" of
the CD.

I like this band quite a bit.

Unfortunately though, my exposure to them is limited to mp3's and the Half Machine Lip Moves/Alien Soundtracks CD.

I saw whichever record has that great picture of what looks like a metal lion emblem (a ring of some sort?) with superimposed evil eyes. I offered the guy selling it (at the Austin record convention) $40, but he would not budge a penny from $60. It was a Sunday and the convention had about 10 minutes left to go. And yet, no Chrome record.

NOT CRAP.

I thought for certain we'd done Chrome. Anyhow...

Among the greatest bands in the history of rock music, no waffle factor. Yeah, yeah, the Damon Edge solo stuff was crap, but the good stuff just can't be touched. I don't have anything new to add to the discussion, I guess, but godDAMN they were great.

Further, the Chrome stuff Helios Creed did after Damon Edge died is pretty ace as well. They played the Young Ave Deli here in 1996 or 1997 (if I recall correctly), but I missed it because I couldn't get out of work. I'm still angry at myself for missing it.

Good luck finding the vinyl.

Not Crap.

I have the T&G Half Machine/Alien Sountracks disc and it is wonderfully demented. How did they get those drum sounds? I honestly have no idea.

Didn't Rey Washam play on a couple Chrome albums? Are those any good?

Chrome are also not crap for inspiring the Jesus Lizard to do "Chome" which is so very delightful. What a fine idea - instead of covering a song by this band, lets take the three best parts of their first two records and make a song like that. So not crap!

i had a rant about how that chrome stuff should be reissued in some other thread. the 3 cd cleopatra "chrome box" has songs cut from the records; i can only assume the full versions would have diverted resources desperately needed for "a punk tribute to metallica volume 4" or the new clan of xymox album. the original chrome box was 5 or 6 LPs, on subterranean records.

i agree w/ redline re: the subterranean moderne lp. that was also where i first heard mx-80 and tuxedomoon.

i think everyone on this forum should at least hear half machine lip moves, and most should probably own it

chrome

Postby Domagoj on Tue Sep 06, 2005 1:33 pm

I am not an expert on Chrome but I like them very much.

Chrome with Helios Creed is great.
I recommend three records that came out after "Half Machine Lip Moves".
These records are lighter on guitar playing except maybe "Third from the Sun" but generally the atmosphere of all of them is alien scary and arresting. If my (read only) memory serves me well...

"Red Exposure" - very good
"Blood on the Moon" - well, good
"Third from the Sun" - very good

The sad fact is that I can't listen to them anymore, I lost my tapes.

I heard few crappy post HC Chrome CDs issued on Dossier too.

The next logical step from "3rd from the Sun" is Helios Creed, not really Damon Edge. But with "Kiss to the Brain" he kissed his brain goodbye for me. What happened after I really don't know.

Chrome with Helios Creed = not crap

I saw Helios Creed play live once (as Helios, not Chrome). Early 90's. It was pretty weird.

His girlfriend played keyboards. If you've ever seen videos of Billy Idol's band, with the keyboard player...she was dressed just like that.

Helios had 2 vocal mics set up. One was normal, and the other was heavily effected (kind of Gibby-sounding). He switched back and forth constantly.

There were less than 10 people at the show.

The only Chrome song I've ever heard is Prongs cover of "Third from the sun". I liked it a lot. It's certainly the best thing Prong ever did. A pity Chrome records are almost impossible to find in Europe, or at least they are in the part of Europe I live in. On the basis of that one cover alone I say Chrome are Not Crap.
