Wow, someone else who remembers those guys.

Which reminds me, I forgot to post to that shameful records thread.

Trivia: that is the same Jason Everman who had a cup of coffee with both Nirvana and Soundgarden.

I was ready to vote Crap based on the name alone. The logo escalates it to MegaUltraCrap. I'm afraid of what might happen if I click the link. I have never heard them and, God willing, never will.

Yeah me too. Extreme hindsight crap to the point of what in the fuck was I thinking around 1994?

I read about their debut record in some magazine and saw Celtic Frost's drummer was in a new band and immediately drove to the store and bought it. I hated it. One song was passable. The rest was a pile. I'm shocked to know they made more records.

It disappointed me on the same level as the first Big Chief record.

Their name is a misnomer, as there is very little funk therein. I might call it a missing link between hair metal and stoner rock, a description that hardly does a better job of selling it.

I got robbed in '94 and that disc went with it. I should probably be grateful. I probably hadn't listened to it in over a year at that point anyway. I had graduated to Tool by then.

there's absolutely no reason to bring this thread back to life

I've been trying to articulate this in my head, but I feel like there's a pointless category of bands from the late 80's / early 90's that's yet to be named. Off the top of my head:

Mind Funk
Bullet LaVolta
Mind Over Four
Into Another
Barkmarket
Skeleton Key

All fit in. I'm sure there's more, anyone?

Skeleton Key? I think they are light years beyond those other bands. Far from perfect, but pretty good.

Teenaged me definitely checked out Mind Funk, most likely because of the Celtic Frost connection. Blech. They make Infectious Grooves seem legit.

Kinda proto-alt rock / alt-metal without being too arty or indie. Still smells of hairspray and the music industry with a slight funk aftertaste. Everyone chasing the market established by Faith No More's The Real Thing. Not metal enough to be culled by Nevermind, but still awkward enough to have a limited shelf life.

I'd call it prematüre-alt-röck.

One sentence prematüre-alt-röck confession: I have enjoyed songs from bands mentioned in this thread when I heard them in the radio BITD.

I love that FM Bernardo is fascinated by the dregs of rock history.

I may have enjoyed songs by other bands listed in this thread, but I never fucking enjoyed one by PAW.

All these bands had second hand riffs. Still, we took what we could get in those days.

I really liked the first Bullet Lavolta ep when it came out. I was probably 13? Maybe 14? They were a Boston band and I lived in Massachusetts. I thought that shit was totally cool. I just listened to it for the first time in forever and it's basically a comedy record. Silly songs, bad drumming, bad singing and terrible shredding over sometimes surprisingly decent riffs. It veers into some second generation Boston hardcore shit as well. You just couldn't possibly make this record with a straight face today.

The late 80s-early 90's had some of the shittiest music ever. They called it 'alternative'. As crappy as nu-metal.

I, too, enjoy Skeleton Key.

I'll nominate Tar Babies and Scatterbrain.
