Live Dead became my favorite summer soundtrack and that tells me I'm getting old.

In my considered opinion, this is roughly 1,000,000 times more bad-ass than anything you or your band has ever done.

Here's some other bad-ass stuff you might be into:

I will give this band not crap, with some waffles. I can't be objectively sure wether or not I like them mainly due to hearing their music a lot at a very you age at my childminders house, and they do occasionally do some shit reggae or something else like that, but certainly there's plenty of stuff from the first 5-10 years that I get a lot of enjoyment from listening to. I think Anthem of the Sun is probably my favourite, the documentary about making that and American Beauty was pretty fascinating.

The John Oswald "Grayfolded" CD is also quite excellent, I think.
Don't shun it. Fun it.

As a casual listener of the Dead (FM radio, friends with drugs, the occasionaly hot hippy chick, etcetera) I can honestly say I have never heard anything I have liked by this band. That said, I've liked everything I've heard by Garcia with David Grissom. Beats me.

I liked it when I was a child. Not so much anymore.

He did play an aluminum guitar for a minute - can't be all bad.

American Beauty is more or less ok.

The rest of this band's catalog is horseshit.

throughout my life, I have had many close friends that were deadheads.

whenever I paid close attention to the music, it just seemed like 5-10 musicians not really listening to each other playing noodly little solos on top of each other- some similar patterns, some not, always "melodic" and safe. bad drumming.

I get the impression that at least 1/3 to 1/2 of the fans of this band in the late 1980's to 1990's were into the lifestyle, not so much the music. so much of the music is fucking awful.

it's funny that their radio hit album is one of their best. my parents had a shrinkwrapped copy of American Beauty that my dad never opened after it was given to him as a gift in 1970 (or thereabouts) because he thought it was "heavy metal"

I'm going to say CRAP.

Earth Wind and Fire and Sun Ra...

Neither of the youtube clips I posted were from performances by American rock bands at the Pyramids in Egypt.

This is an objective truth and in no way opinion.

I've always been enamored with the ideas behind the Grateful Dead, even though I have not heard much of their music or listened to what I have heard all that closely. I've been meaning to for a while.

I think it's bullshit that they were lumped in with so much other hippie detritus by the punk rockers. The Dead were at least sincere about their lifestyle and kept it going (and going) in order to prove that.

Long guitar solos played while flying on acid kicks ass, I don't care what anyone says.

Check out Live/Dead. Everybody (not counting obsessive tape-collecting douches) seems to pretty much agree that it's about as good as the Grateful Dead got. You get the panorama of noodly psych, traditional folk songs, "noise," etc.

I think it's good enough that you might even still feel that way about guitar solos and acid after you get done listening to it.

There's a track on there called "Feedback" that wouldn't sound out of place on a Dead C record.

If you get into it and decide you want to go from there to "Dick's Picks" or whatever the fuck, I can't help you.

The only Dead I've heard is on a "Dick's Picks" CD I bought when I was fifteen.

It was pretty fantastic. "Playing in the Band" is gorgeous. Just never listened to it very much at all.

Thanks for the advice, I'll see if I can't check out "Live/Dead" from the library or something one of these days.

Garcia's soloing sounds almost as bad to me as those st Sanders overdub things. The rest of the band, and his singing in particular, I like.
