I watched Part One last night, and I'm in agreement with you on this. I was shocked at how complex and delicate Von Trier played it. I was fully expecting it to be what you had described ("a gross film devaluing women's sexuality and slut-shaming.") Will probably get into part two tonight.

Man, the Uma Thurman scene. So rough.

Watched all of Part I and II last night and it was really good. The ending fit, I thought. Kind of want to see the five and a half hour cut.

I liked it much more than I thought I would, despite some usual Von Trier-isms: long story to make a single point, heavy handed (didn't at all need the Skarsgard recap "but if you were a man doing these things.."), etc. The very end was a little predictable but necessary: it was important to see her declaration followed almost immediately by his 'you're damaged goods anyway' advance. I guess I don't fully understand why she wasn't able to shoot LeBouf, need to think about that a little more.

NC. Big time suck, but far better than his last few films. The few lines about political correctness were funny after that controversy.

I'm not sure why this is a common misconception about Von Trier. It's doesn't surprise me that a good number of general movie-goers might not get that he is generally quite enlightened, and good humoured, but even on a forum rampant with sarcasm and many favoured bands playing with similar tongue-in-cheek nihilism, he sometimes gets misunderstood. I guess people expect film directors to be serious chin-stroker types or hipster auteurs, but he's just a good natured provocateur. I don't really think he's any more edgy than Fassbinder, yet I don't hear people complaining about him much. The sexual politics on display here are not far from his earlier Idiots.

I don't know about "quite enlightened," but yes, if you went into a Von Trier movie thinking it was simply going to be full of gross slut-shaming, you are underestimating him.

Reasonably grounded, politically and morally, sound better? I just mean he's not actually a Nazi or a woman hater, though he'll play the part to prove a point or even just get a cheap laugh. Yet this is all anybody focuses on. I think it's fine to hate the guy, and his movies, but hating him for things that aren't true is misguided, and derails an otherwise worthwhile discussion of his merits.

He delivers nuanced pieces, unlike the American auteurs of his generation. He uses a lot of brutal imagery but I don't think he crosses the line into pointlessly bludgeoning the audience. Pseudointellectual, overwrought, often lacking in taste and poorly balanced between making the point and using the "too good not to use" image, sure. But viewing his shit has rewards. Compared to say, Harmony Korine, Todd Solondz, Wes Anderson, P.T. Anderson, Tarantino, maybe even Oliver Stone; I'll take Trier every time.

That would make a great ranking exercise. mine would be something like:

P.T. Anderson
Tarantino
Harmony Korine
Oliver Stone (had a decent run for a short while)
Wes Anderson
Todd Solondz

Trier is on an entirely different category, IMO.

I heard talk of him doing a new take on Five Obstructions with some really famous director, I forget who, maybe it was Scorcese or something?

So just watched Nymphomaniac, what a crock. Middle class porn disguised as 'art'.
The clunky way her story is related to some philosophical/religious/arty stuff just seemed contrived and tenuous. Like some 17 yr old who just discovered some intellectual concepts and tries to throw them into every conversation to show how smart he is.
Charlotte Gainsbourg....not familiar with her work so can't judge her capabilities on this one film but jeez what a bland uninteresting character....suppose that could have been direction, maybe to contrast with the 'outrageous' story she's telling? But also Christian Slater - not trying to say he's the best actor on the planet but that was the worst performance I've seen him give. I blame the director.

Saw Breaking The Waves and Dancer In The Dark years ago, quite a harrowing experience. Swore I would never watch any of his films again. Wish I'd stuck to that vow.

Crap.

The House That Jack Built’s Lars von Trier Unsure If Audience Hated the Film Enough

“[The walkouts and audible groans] made me very relaxed,” von Trier told Cineuropa. “It’s quite important not to be loved by everybody, because then you’ve failed. I’m not sure if they hated it enough, though. If it gets too popular, I’ll have a problem.

“But the reception seemed just about right, I think,” added von Trier. “In any case, this one was a pleasure to write. I don’t know too much about serial killers, but I do know a bit about psychopaths. And I’ve never killed anyone myself… If I do, it will probably be a journalist.”

I have a feeling that he and Trump would get along quite well.

Dude is nothing but a shock artist who seems to put more effort into his silly public persona than the art he produces.

Probably wants to kill journalists :smt023
Is fond of Hitler :smt023
Massive troll :smt023

He's basically Uwe Boll with slightly better taste.

Again, I really struggle how people on this forum in particular struggle with LVT's sarcasm. If one was to take Big Black lyrics literally, it would be an ugly scene here. He's speaking with a journalist, and taking the most obvious piss imaginable while promoting a Serial Killer movie. He's said virtually nothing to the press for 7 years. It actually fascinates me, why people allow for specific spokespeople who get to be extreme, but others need to watch their mouth. I can totally respect you dont like Triers art or jokes or face or whatever, but instead you say he is a Nazi, murderer and Trump fan. Its so incredibly off base that it makes you sound frustatingly ignorant, rather than just opinionated.

I'll agree with this much.

I've only seen some of his movies and have not followed offscreen controversy beyond being slightly aware of it. I'm not saying there isn't something of value there, but I can't find it worth all the dumbshit.
