I really like this band. I saw then at the Note on the Thursday before the Touch and Go 25th. I thought it was great. I am still looking for the "When the Mutes Begin to Root" 7" if anyone knows where to find one.

These guys were / are effin great. They're no Cicus Lupus but they are still fantastic. I wish i would have caught them live. I thought Chris Thompson went away after Skull Control and then to my suprise i see him rockin in the Red Eyed Legends in the Chicago Burn To Shine DVD. Definitly one on the better performances on that video.

I don't like this band, I want to but there's nothing there for me.
The first track on the first record is ok, the rest is just kinda there.

Banned from the board for use of the word 'meh', especially in relation to band designed to remove the 'meh' before the 'meh' was even invented. They're anti-meh. The non-meh.

I have extremely fond memories of seeing the Monorchid rip into "Bitch Test" in the 90s. Better live than on record, although their 7"s are pretty phenomenal: "Imposter Costume with Rooted Hair Mask" and whichever one has "Red Meat" on it.

NOT CRAP.

Absolutely not crap.

Didn't they play a show somewhere in Chicago on the Friday night of the Touch and Go 25th? I seem to remember a friend of mine calling me telling me and my friends to meet them there. Alas, it was 21+ and one person in our group was only 19. Fucking bummer.

Despite the malfunctioning bass amp during their T&G set, I was into it. Stood in the freezing cold rain and watched every second of it from beginning to end. I thought they dealt with it pretty well, considering how frustrating it surely must have been.

Again, NOT crap.

I saw them the night at the Note before the T&G 25th show and at the Block Party show.

They were boring both times.

Hang on to your memories folks, keep looking back throught them rosy glasses.

Oh please. I'm talking about summer 1996, Chris Hamley in top form, Chris Thomson spitting his wild, almost poetic rants in yellow-tinted swimming goggles. Of all the DC bands I cared about from that era, they were the most exhilarating. LIVE.

You missed it and I'm sorry.

Now, whether Andy Coronado ought to reckon for helping pioneer emo haircuts is quite a separate issue.

The more I listen to them, the more I'm convinced that this band has made two of the best punk rock records ever.

Chris Thompson ruled in his gradual transitions from one band to another.

Where is he now?

the Monorchid was all right.

I once drove seven hours from Cleveland to DC to see the Monorchid at the 9:30 club and was less than impressed with their live show. Which still doesn't make a damned bit of difference to me because their performances, both recorded and live (WRCT-FM live bootleg! best demo ever! OMIGOD that first 7-inch!!!), still make my neck hair stand at attention.

When I (and I'm unashamedly confessing here) finally heard Captain Beefheart's "Ice Cream for Crow," several years after having first heard The Monorchid, all sorts of musical gaps started filling in for me. Until then I was only thinking that maybe Chris Thomson was fond of the Fall and, wow, how awesome is that that they decided to have a guitar in each speaker channel. So, massive NOT CRAP based on the fact that the Monorchid kept me believing in punk rock during a dry spell while also making me crate-dig to discover all sorts of amazing stuff that preceded punk.

He's in a pretty good band in Chicago called Coffin Pricks:

I still have never heard (I don't think, anyway) a single note of this band's. How did I manage that after all this time?

I will have to fix this.
