I read the first issue. I don't get it, it isn't horrible but it's certainly nothing special either. No idea why so many gush over it.

It looks like AMC has a mini-series based on The Walking Dead coming up in October.

I've read the first bound volume, which ends when they get to the prison. I liked it enough, and the fact that it's so long-running means they can really work over the themes that are only hinted at in shorter forms, like two hour movies. I'll watch the series for sure. I'll say not crap, based on what I've read.

Maybe because you've only read one issue. It takes a few arcs to get into it. The character development is very intricate (for a zombie comic, at least) and Kirkman shows a willingness to brutalise and kill even his most beloved characters if the story warrants. Basically unheard of in a mainstream American comic book, given the consistent trends of death/resurrection that have been a mainstay since the early 90s. An irony, when most deaths can end with a resurrection of sorts.

There was quite a good bit of what you're talking about in 100 Bullets.

Oh aye? I've not read that. Is it worth a punt?

Without going into details, hell yes. However, I'd read the first three trades.
Don't just stop after the first trade.

My friends love this comic. Me, I'm not so much into comics.

Here's a pretty solid piece on the comic for the curious:

I just ordered Book 2, which is #'s 13-24 in the series. My library has the first three in the 100 Bullets series. Thanks for turning me on to that.

Here's a link inside the AMC website, to the "video" section of the Walking Dead pages. The "motion animation" movie is pretty cool.

Wouldn't let me view it, watched the trailer on youtube. Hmmm. We'll see. Seems a bit pointless to me.

The Walking Dead Trailer

Looks pretty good to me.

I voted Brains thinking that meant good, zombies like brains right? I think I might have done it wrong.

Walking Dead is not crap

Love, love, love it.

My favorite comic going. Probably my favorite ever.

What's most telling about the strength of the writing is how, 30-odd issues in, I forgot all about the zombies lurking in the background. That's how deeply engrossing I found the human interactions to be. By all accounts, the humans in the book have proven to be far deadlier than the zombies.

Awesome. I'm going to go to the Oregon Symphony providing the live score for a screening of Psycho, then come home to the pilot to The Walking Dead. A good Halloween it will be.
